Electromagnetism Remedial 2 (a) Draw a diagram showing the magnetic field pattern due to a long, straight wire

carrying a current flowing out of the plane of the paper.

Take µ0 = 4π × 10−7 H m−1 ; e = 1.60 × 10−19 C ; me = 9.11 × 10−31 kg ; mp = 1.67 × 10−27 kg

At a distance r from a wire, the magnitude of the flux density B is given by B =
1 The figure below shows a simple form of a current balance. It consists of a horizontal 2π r
rectangular copper loop ABCDEF, freely pivoted on the axis AF. The loop is inserted Calculate the value of B at 0.60 m from the cable carrying a current of 800 A.
into a long solenoid S so that the side CD is in the middle of the solenoid and
perpendicular to the axis of the solenoid. (c) Ions in the atmosphere will be affected by the magnetic field produced by the cable
described in (b). Figure 2 below shows the path of an ion as it approaches a cable

P, a distance of 0.60 m from the cable, it is traveling directly towards the cable at a
D E speed of v = 1.0 × 104 m s−1. The charge of the ion is −1.602 × 10−19 C. (Ignore

Given: BC = 15.0 cm and CD = 5.0 cm.

(a) The solenoid has 100 turns per metre and carries a current of 6.0 A. Given that
the magnetic flux density B on the axis of a long solenoid is B = µ0 nΙ , calculate 0.60 m

the magnetic flux density in the region of side CD of the loop.

(b) When a current I is passed through the loop, a rider of mass 0.50 g placed 4.0 cm
from the axis AF is needed to restore equilibrium. A

(i) Calculate the clockwise moments about the axis AF due to the rider.
direction of current
(ii) By balancing moments, calculate the current I.
(i) 1. Calculate the force acting on the ion when it is at P.
2. On Fig. 2, draw an arrow on the ion at point P indicating the direction of
the force.
(ii) What is the velocity of the ion at A?
(iii) With reference to Fig. 2, explain how the path of the ion is affected by the
magnetic field, paying attention to how the field varies with distance from the
cable and the direction of the magnetic field.
3 A positively charged proton is moving with constant velocity v, enters a uniform
magnetic field B that is perpendicular to the initial direction of motion of the proton, as
shown in Fig. 3 below. The proton passes though undeflected.

(a) (i) Given that a uniform electric field is applied as shown above, deduce and
state the direction of the uniform magnetic field in the same region (i.e. if it is
into or out of the plane of paper).

(ii) Given that v = 1000 m s−1 and B = 1.20 T, calculate the magnitude of the
electric field.

(b) The proton is now replaced by other particles. The electric and magnetic fields
remain unchanged. State and explain the deviation, if any, of the following particles
in the region of the fields.

(i) a positively charged particle which has twice the charge and twice the mass
of the proton with initial speed v.
(ii) an electron with initial speed v.
(iii) a neutral particle of the same mass as the proton and with initial speed v.
(iv) a proton with initial speed 2v.
