Ida a film by Poland director Pawel Pawlikowski is one of the
masterpiece films in this era. In the era of colorful films, some
of the directors are trying to make some colorless beautiful
films in black & white Pawel is one of them. Due to the black
& white color theme, it really gives the vibe of the 1960s.
In the world of the 16:9 aspect ratio, Pawel has used a 1.37:1
(4:3) aspect ratio which gives a more interesting and dramatic
feel in the film. The result is a nearly square frame allowing
for a lot of unexpected compositions, and by using a static
and very different type of composition it looks more
cinematic to watch the film. In the film, there are lots of static
frames used by the director by just putting the camera on the
tripod. The aspect ratio 4:3 which has been used in the film
also shows case the beauty and structure that we have to
watch in the frame.
For the upcoming filmmakers, this film is definitely an
inspiration because of the plot, the way the story is going on,
and because of the camera techniques which have been
shown differently to portray the story to the audience. The
film also won an Oscar for Best International Feature Film
2015 and won many other awards in 2015.
While in the film if we observe there is a lot of negative space
used in the film by the director which makes the audience
more attentive and curious about the film that something is
different in this film compare to other filmss

than it is. And with the ratio 1.37:1 it looks something

Basically the rule of third is used to grab the attention of the


audience on the practically object in the frame which look
more attractive.

contrast which only decide the frame is good or not. In the
case of the Ida film it is best known for its lightning and
contrast which suddenly catch eye on the frame.
