● How do neighborhood conditions, his job and income situation and being an

Neighborhood conditions have a direct impact on a parent’s ability to keep their children out of
harm's way. “Place matters because it determines what social, environment, physical, or
chemical agents you might get exposed to” (Adelman, 2008). Gwai is at a disadvantage when it
comes to finding a home in good neighborhood conditions. Since he works as a school janitor,
his income is not sustainable for a home in a better area, while also supporting his family. In
Gwai’s neighborhood, he is exposed to chemical pollutants from a factory that may have played
a role in his health decline. “Things like quality, low cost housing, clean parks, safe streets,
access to good food choices, and sidewalks promote health and wellbeing” (Adelman, 2008).
When a family does not have access to these things, they are at a direct disadvantage. All of
this has most likely negatively impacted Gwai’s stress level. These chronic stressors can
present negatively in health side effects. Options such as low cost, safe housing, direct access
to healthy food choices, and access to affordable healthcare would make things better for
Gwai’s family and many others.

There are many health advantages for residents of wealthier neighborhoods when compared to
residents of low income neighborhoods. Neighborhoods, such as Gwai’s, experience much
higher rates of obesity, hypertension, heart disease, low birth weight, and poverty. When living
in a safer neighborhood, the risks for these things are not nearly as high. Almost all of the low-
income communities are exposed to environmental hazards, which play a significant role in
individual health. For example, the ingestion of environmental pollutants can contribute to non-
alcoholic fatty liver disease (Dolce & Della Torre, 2023). With further research, we will learn
more about health conditions that can develop from pollutants and better understand the risks
these neighborhood residents are in.
