What are your plans after completing your degree in the United States?
How does it align with your career aspirations in India?
I would like to study in the United States because US has one of the most advanced
research facilities and professors to teach the particular course I am going to do my
masters in. It will help me expose myself to advanced education resources, cutting edge
tech and will give me great exposure. My loan term plan is to start a business of my in
India and this will aid that plan.
Research/Thesis based masters - Few reasons, United States and the university I am
going to is one of the best research universities in the world for AI/CS/VR/CM/
machine learning. And I am particularly interested in working with XYZ professor and
their specializations in ABC industry has particularly interested me the most.
What are your plans for funding your education and living expenses in the United
States? Can you provide documentation to support this?
(Continued below)
I am taking a loan of $ABC which is INR xyz from [lender’s name] plus I have
assistance from my parents as well. My loan will cover most of the education and
the remaining will be covered by my parents/my own savings.
Here is the loan approval/sanction letter from the lender and the account statement
of my parent's account to show that I can cover the tuition and living expenses.
People with some experience: Few reasons, I have all my family in India plus my
reasoning behind doing a masters degree is to advance my career in the company I
am working in. I already have a verbal offer to re-join my current company and if a
better opportunity persists I would love to take that over in India.
People with no experience: I would like to use the CPT, OPT and STEM extension
given to me by the US government to be able to work in the US for 3 years. I would
like to leverage that experience and get great job offers once I move back to India. I
have all my family here and that’s my biggest reason to come back to India.
Are you aware of any cultural or lifestyle differences between your home country and
the United States? How do you plan to adapt to them? (less likely to be asked)
It’s part of moving to any new country after all. While growing up we have watched a lot
of US tv shows like friends and the office so I am a little acclimated to the US culture
already but yes definitely a lot to learn. I have the understanding the universities also
help international students with group activities to help them learn about the US culture.
So I am looking forward for to that.
What is the significance of your chosen field of study, and
how will it contribute to the development of your home
country?
(This has to be modified by you as a student. I will give you what I would answer now
with my degree in construction management)
Have you applied to other universities in the United States? If yes, what were the
outcomes of those applications?
If you have gotten only one admit, it might be worth it reduce the number of
applications you applied for to lesser than what you actually applied to. A lot of
rejections sometimes throw some visa officers off.
Talk about what aspects of the university you liked that made you choose this
university/program. Talk preferably about the fact that your chosen university offers
a slightly more exhaustive coursework in your area of interest, talk of the positive
feedback you received about the program from some of the current students at the
university. If funding from the university was one of the reasons for selecting it, you
can mention that as the reason as well.
Can you explain any gaps in your academic history or provide
further clarification on certain aspects of your application?
Academic gaps are completely okay. So do not worry about it at all. A lot of students
even take a gap year in US after their school so it’s extremely common and known.
AND NO WORK EXPERIENCE IS NOT GAP ON YOUR PROFILE!!!!!
I took a gap year after my undergrad to rethink my options and where I would like to
take my career. It was getting overwhelming for me get some work experience and also
going through the application procedure so I decided I’d like to focus on one thing.
What are your long-term goals and how does studying in the
United States contribute to achieving them?
My long term is go the entrepreneur route and having the connections, exposure and
knowledge from a US universities will contribute significantly to that long term goal.
Plus it always helps having the great brand name associated with you when you are
starting a business.
Can you provide more details about the specific program and
courses you will be pursuing in the United States?
I can’t give you an answer for this but what I can tell you is please go through your
curriculum and each and every course name and what the description says. It’s really
important you do this incase they ask you to list some of the courses you will be
taking and what they will be teaching you. The visa officer doesn’t want to know what
exactly you are going to learn but just a small description to see how serious you are.
Have you received any scholarships or financial aid for your
studies? If yes, can you explain the terms and conditions?
I have graduated from ABC university with a degree in XYZ engineering in 20XX. I
have also been part of LMN organizations and I have been working in TUV firm for 3
years as a ABC engineer.
Can you explain your choice of major or field of study and how it aligns with your
previous academic background and future career goals?
Here is the answer I would give for my industry: I have done civil engineering degree
and there were a few routes I could take as a civil engineer, like structural engineer,
water engineer but I chose construction management because I love interacting with
people and this was a field which would allow me to see the construction plus let me
work with different teams for each and every project. Being on the contractor side
will help me learn a lot of scopes of construction and understand the US
construction industry better.
My future career goal is to start a business in the construction industry and this
degree will assist me in doing that.
Have you visited the United States before? If yes, can you
provide details about your previous visits?
Yes, I visited the US in 20xx with my family on a trip. We visited a few cities like NYC,
San Francisco and Miami.
Yes, I have my brother/sister in the US. He/She is working in an ABC company in the
XYZ city as a [title].
Yes, I have some extended family in the US. My uncle lives in the US in [state].
Most likely this question will be asked to students who are going for Phds but in case
it gets thrown at you, this is how you answer it.
I have always been focussed on the corporate world and that’s why I have 2
internships during my summer in undergrad.
If you are Phd or going for masters and have some academic background please
prepare an elevator pitch for your paper/ research project you have worked on and
give that as an answer during this.
Are you planning to work part-time while studying in the
United States? If yes, can you explain how you will balance
work and studies?
I am planning to work part time as it will help me save some money in my total
expenses but I would work most likely 10-12 hrs/week depending on my coursework.
Especially in first semester I would take it easy so as to ensure I am able to
understand the US teaching methods and courses.
What is your plan for medical insurance coverage during your stay
in the United States?
The university offers health insurance for all international students. They haven’t sent
all information right now but they will be sending more details closer to the start date.
The university offers health insurance for all international students. It will cover me
through out the year and then I just have to renew it before its over.
I am sure it will take my sometime to get used to the processes and style of teaching
plus I have reached out to some alumnus to understand the teachings and academic
challenges they had to get a head start on it.
From what I have researched most of the graduate students live off campus/on
campus ( this will depend on the university you are going for). I will be finalizing my
accommodation after the visa interview.
