READING

Erin’s Blog  Roman Holiday

I’m writing today’s blog in a café in the Piazza Navona, right in the centre of Rome. My aunt has just bought me the best
ice cream I’ve ever tasted! My brother Liam has gone for a walk with our uncle this morning. He loves taking photos of the
old buildings. Liam and I have been at my uncle and aunt’s flat for six days now. He’s Irish and she’s Italian and they met
while they were both studying in London in 1998. It’s been lovely to stay with them and we’ve had a fantastic holiday.
It’s been hot and sunny every day since we arrived and we’ve been to the beach several times with my cousins. On
Wednesday my uncle drove us to Naples so we could visit Pompeii, the Roman town that was destroyed when Mount
Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. It took us nearly three hours to get there, but I’m so glad we went. It’s incredible to walk
around a complete Roman town. Liam’s never taken so many photos in one day!
I think Rome is probably the most beautiful city I’ve ever been to. There are so many things to see and do and we’ve been
sightseeing every day since we got here. We’ve already seen the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, but we haven’t
been to the Vatican yet. I think my aunt’s booked us tickets for this afternoon, so we’ll be able to see the Sistine Chapel – I
can’t wait!
We’ve had some amazing meals since we’ve been in Italy. Last night we went to a lovely restaurant on the coast about
half an hour’s drive from Rome. We sat on a terrace facing the sea and we watched the sunset while we were eating.
The view was spectacular and the food was incredible. As you can see, we persuaded the waiter to take a photo of us
while we were waiting for the food to arrive. I had fish soup as a starter, followed by a seafood risotto for my main course.
Everything was so tasty. However, for me the best part was the tiramisu I had for dessert – it was absolutely delicious!
Anyway, tomorrow’s our last day and our flight back to Dublin departs at 8.00 p.m., so we’ll probably get home around
midnight. My uncle thinks we should set off for the airport at about five o’clock. I think my aunt’s going to cook us a typical
Roman Sunday lunch before we go. She’s an amazing cook so I’m really looking forward to it.
