Shop test pressure determination for Chamber bounded by Bottom Head and Top Head based on user defined pressure
The shop test is performed with the vessel in the horizontal position.
Notes:
(1) PL stresses at nozzle openings have been estimated using the method described in PVP-Vol. 399, pages 77-82.
(2) 1.5*0.9*Sy used as the basis for the maximum local primary membrane stress at the nozzle intersection PL.
(3) The zero degree angular position is assumed to be up, and the test liquid height is assumed to the top-most flange.
The field test condition has not been investigated for the Chamber bounded by Bottom Head and Top Head.
The test temperature of 10 °C is warmer than the minimum recommended temperature of -29.3 °C so the brittle fracture provision of UG-99(h) has
been met.

KOREA ENGINEERING CONSULTING, INC STRESS ANALYSIS FOR TAILING LUGS 86/109
PROGRAM : NISA(NISA SOFTWARE, INC.) REV. NO. : 1
ITEM : 24-VF-6723A/B PAGE NO. : 3 / 26
1. INTRODUCTION
For evaluating the stability analysis of the H2S REMOVAL GUARD BED(24-VF-
6723A/B) for some components under several kinds of load combinations based on the use of
Specification Material & Erection Load Datasheet depending on the loading conditions,
detailed respective FE analysis and load functionality are considered the effect of maximum
critical design load cases for comparison to acceptance criteria to determine the suitability of a
components.
This report summarizes the stress analysis on tailing lug area and skirt bracing support
parts under defined erection loading conditions. The stability of tailing lug and skirt support with
base ring components are performed by means of FEA (Finite Element Analysis).
The analyses are performed under erection design load condition to determine
comparison to acceptance criteria and the suitability of a components based on the design
requirements for application of the design-by-analysis methodology described in ASME 2013 Part
5 and User Design Specification for stress evaluation which are provided as part of the design for
an accurate stress analysis including validation of all results
This analysis is accomplished by using the NISA program (Version 17.1), which is based
on the Finite Element Method (FEM) and recognized internationally for following purposes.
2. DESIGN CRITERIA
The design criteria of the equipment is provided by the Owner's Design Specification
and the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The equipment is analyzed using the codes
and standards in the following design condition.
The material data in this model are taken from 2013Edition, ASME Code Sec. Ⅱ, Part D,
Table TM-1 for elastic modulus and Table PRD for Poisson’s ratio, respectively. And the
allowable stresses for the materials used in the construction of this air cooler are taken from Table
1A of ASME Code Sec.II, Part D.
So values of elastic modulus, allowable stress and Poisson’s ratio are listed in Table 1 as
a function of temperature.

3.2 FE MODEL
The general purpose finite element software NISA II and its common graphical pre and
post processor DISPLAY III has been used for finite element modeling and analysis. The details of
formulation, capabilities and validation of the finite element library can be found in NISA users
and verification manual.
This model have been modeled by using 3D shell model (4-node quadrilateral Element:
NKTP=20) to evaluate the stresses of lifting tailing lug and its related components under design
erection condition.
In order to get more accurate results, finer mesh capabilities are considered in this
model considering approximately aspect ratio 1: 1~2. The total number of nodes and elements
are tabulated in Table 2.
The scope of analysis for tailing lug limits to study the stresses in base ring and bracing
beams are. Appropriate extents of skirt are considered for application of displacement boundary
condition.
The boundary conditions on proper extension section of skirt support are constrained as
all DOF as shown in Fig. 3.

For evaluating the various stress components occurred on tailing lug connection to
reinforcing pad area under Lifting force(X&Y&Z-direction) due to erection weight of vessel
acting on tailing lug, the following loads are defined in Table 3.
Rigid link is employed at the center of tailing lug to apply the lifting loads. Specified
loads are shown in table 3 and applied to master node of rigid rink.
Various load conditions from lifting lug calculation sheet are considered the effect of
lifting load direction in FEA. As the result of checking the stresses, the assessment for two load
cases is analyzed and occurred in stresses and represented in attached figures.
The details of specified lifting load conditions applied to the Finite Element Analysis for
tailing lugs are presents below.
4. STRESS EVALUATION
NISA II solver has been employed to carry out linear elastic response analysis. The
results from the analysis have been processed to determine the stress in the critically stressed
regions in these models under design condition.
The requirement for the acceptability of a design is that the calculated Equivalent Stress
(Von-Mises Stress) shall not exceed specified allowable Equivalent Stress limits described in
Figures 5.1[Stress Categories and Limits of Equivalent Stress] of ASME Sec. VIII, Div. 2, Part 5.
The stress results are evaluated for compliance with the criteria cited in Table
5.6[Examples of Stress Classification] of ASME Code Sec. VIII, Div. 2, Part 5 for the various
categories of equivalent stress. These include;
A quantity known as the equivalent stress is computed at any locations in the component
and compared to an allowable stress value of equivalent stress to determine if the component is
suitable for the intended design conditions. The equivalent stress at a point, in a component is a
measure of stress, calculated from stress components utilizing a yield criterion, which is used for
comparison with the mechanical strength properties in accordance with ASME Sec.II, Part D.
The stresses are occurred by the constrained of the adjacent part. So, the stress category
of Primary Local Membrane and Primary plus Secondary equivalent stresses are considered for
load cases in accordance with ASME Code Sec. VIII, Div.2.

5. CONCLUSION
The stress evaluation of the equipment Unit is applied to ASME Code Sec. VIII, Div.2.
For the stress evaluation of the Equipment Unit, the stability analysis is made by using FEM
software of NISAⅡ/DISPLAYⅢ. The equivalent stress values by means of FE stability analysis
are used to find the acceptable limits (S) in these evaluation regions.
The results from the analysis have been processed to determine Von-Mises Stress in the
critically stressed regions of tailing lug under all applicable applied load conditions. The stress
results from finite element stress analysis are found to be comparable with those obtained from
the rule based on design calculations. The skirt, tailing lug with bracing support beams are
considered safe under erection load case conditions(i.e considering approximately aspect ratio 1:
1~3 at the stress evaluation zone for element size). It is observed that the stresses in bracing beam,
base ring of tailing lug-to-pad junction and skirt-to-pad junctions under erection load conditions
with other mechanical loads are well within allowable limits.
Therefore the design of skirt, tailing lug with bracing support beams complies with the
code requirements and is considered safe.
