1 Introduction.
This service manual describes the characteristics, specifications, installation, and
service and maintenance for the Comtel WPAS Outdoor Warning Siren speaker
arrays.

1.1 General.
WPAS horns and WPAS siren controller are a family of electronic sirens that are
capable of producing high intensity warning signals over a large area.
The siren consists of a speaker array and a controller unit including electronics and
batteries. A highly efficient design enables the siren to produce a high sound level.

1.2 Comtel loudspeaker horn module.

Comtel loudspeaker horn module is constructed from specially designed aluminium
cast, which provides a frequency response from 250Hz to 1000Hz (2000Hz ± 6dB).
Each of the radiating horns will have a commercially available electrodynamics
compression driver to avoid single source suppliers of this component. The horn
module-driver combination will allow a maximum 100W incident electrical power.
As an option for specific very high output requirement special projects, the horn
could be fitted with a double driver adapter which would allow two drivers per horn
to be fitted allowing the power output per horn to be increased to 200W incident
electrical power.
An epoxy resin powder coating is used for improved protection. The alloy used, is
Marine Grade 230 D Aluminium and the powder coating is INTERPON 700 Epoxy
Polyester.
The compact size and the low weight of 14 kg (6.36 lbs), allows the installer to easily
build the required array.

In the directional configuration, the loudspeakers array can be installed side by side
(2 columns pattern) or in vertical stack (1 column pattern).
The diameter of the steel pole should be at least 115mm (4.5 inches) and not greater
than 127mm (5.0 inches).
The individual horns of the siren head shall be attached to the steel pole, in such a
way that no accumulative mechanical stress from vertical or horizontal forces is
applied to any single horn. Such forces will be absorbed by the steel pole, designed
in accordance with the current practice of structural engineers of the end user.
The individual horns will be attached to the steel pole by the integral pole mounting
clamps (side by side configuration). An additional pole mounting clamp is used to
attach the individual horn to the steel pole when a vertical stack configuration is
required.
Installation of any additional horns does not require dismantling of the existing horns
or removal of their electrical connections.
The area of electrical contact between these clamps and the steel-supporting pole is
large to provide a low impedance path for any high currents induced by lightning
discharges.
The electrical cables that connect to the compression drivers are routed inside the
steel supporting pole to provide mechanical protection and protection against high
voltage fields induced by lightning discharges.
These connecting cables are protected up to the actual compression driver. A two
pin, key orientated robust connector is provided, permitting easy replacement of the
compression driver.
The siren speaker array will operate from ─25O C to + 60O C.
Storage temperature: ─ 30O C to + 60O C.

4 Installation of a horn speaker array.
The array can be mounted on a free standing pole or tower, on a gabled roof or in
any way that the specific site requires.
The diameter of the steel pole should be at least 115mm (4.5 inches) and not greater
than 127mm (5.0 inches). The installation of a WPAS D 1-3-115 directional speaker
array horns installation procedure will be described as an example for horns
installation.

4.1 Horns installation.

 Unpack the horns, the drivers and the installation materials. Inspect the
quantities as they are described in paragraph 3.1.2 (page 9).
 Mount the first horn with the relevant horn clamp at a distance of 2 cm from the
top of the mast. Place the pole cap brackets at the upper bolts pair (Picture 1).
Tight the bolts firmly.

Picture 1.

WPAS Directional Speaker Array. 2014 rev. 1_0 Page 11

 Mount the loudspeaker cable to the cable clamp. Carefully, thread the individual
conductor pairs downwards through the horn’s casting (Picture 2).

Picture 2.

 Pass the first conductor pair through the respective recesses at the previously
mounted horn. (Picture 3).

Picture 3.

WPAS Directional Speaker Array. 2014 rev. 1_0 Page 12

 Mount the second horn with the relevant horn clamp. Pass the second
conductor pair through the respective recesses at the previously mounted
horn (Refer to picture 3).

 Place the cable cover at its position. Ensure that the cable cover is firmly located
in the recesses in the horn casting. Ensure that the second horn’s casting is
firmly located in the cable cover previously installed and that no individual
conductor is trapped between the cable cover and the mast. Tight the bolts
firmly (Picture 4).

 Mount the third horn with the relevant horn clamp. Pass the third conductor
pair through the respective recesses at the previously mounted horn (Refer
to picture 3).

Picture 4.

WPAS Directional Speaker Array. 2014 rev. 1_0 Page 13

4.2 Compression driver installation.
 Insert the attached rubber O-rings to the compression driver’s socket, to
obtain resistance against intrusion of water.
 Observe the drain hole on the compression driver (Picture 1).

Picture 1.

 Carefully, install the compression driver. Ensure that the attached driver’s
cable is not trapped between driver’s body and horn’s casting. Tight the
driver firmly, using hand force. Ensure that the drain hole will face the ground
(6 o’clock position) when the mast will be erased to its final position.

WPAS Directional Speaker Array. 2014 rev. 1_0 Page 14

 Connect the drivers’ connector to the individual conductor pair. Cover the
connection with an appropriate insulation tape, for protection against
corrosion. Install the pole cap in its final position (Picture 2).

Picture 2.

 Be extremely careful with the polarization of the individual conductor pairs.

The odd numbered conductor has to be connected to the circular section of
the loudspeaker cable connector. Any reversal connection, will adversely
affect to the SPL of the siren system (Picture 3).

Note: Before the mast will be erased in its final position, use a
multi tester to verify that there is no any cable break (the
resistance value for an individual cable pair connected to a
compression driver varies from 4.5 to 5.5 Ohms) and, there is no
short circuit between the speaker cables and the mast’s body.

4.3 Antenna’s mast installation (Optional).
If required, an antenna mast can be installed on the speaker array, to support a radio
communication aerial.
 Using the attached horn mounting bolts, install the two antenna clamps
(Picture 1), between the first two horns of the array.
 Using the attached U bolts, install the antenna’s support mast (Picture 2).
