KNOCK-OUT

IT IS THE COMPETITION WHERE CONTESTANTS

[ TEAMS OR INDIVIDUALS ] ONCE DEFEATED
GET ALIMINATED THAT IS WHY IT IS ALSO
KNOWN SINGLE KNOCK - OUT TOURNAMENT.
 FIXTURE
The following points must be considered :-
1.No. of teams
2.No. of byes in each half.
3.No. of teams in each half.
▪ 1. Bye – It is a dummy that does not play the
first round.
▪ No. of byes = [(2n ) – No. of teams] i.e. the
next higher value of (2) minus the total no. of
teams.
3. No. of matches played = N -1 (N-No. of
teams).
4. No. of teams in each half- if teams are even –
N/2 in each half.- if teams are odd.
* N + 1 in upper half.
2
* N – 1 in lower half.
2
EXAMPLES:-

-WHEN THE NO.OF TEAM IS 14,THE NO. OF BYE WILL BE-

NO.OF TEAMS= 14.
NEXT HIGHEST POWER OF TWO= 16.
DIFFERENCE[ NO.OF BYES ]=16-14=2.

-WHEN THE NO.OF TEAM IS 19

NEXT HIGHEST POWER OF TWO = 32
NO. OF BYE = 32-19 = 13 BYES
NUMBER OF BYES:-

▪ IF NO . OF TEAM IS 11 THEN,
NO. OF BYE TO BE GIVEN = 16 – 11 = 5
NO. OF BYE IN EACH HALF,
UPPER HALF = NB - ½ = 5 - ½ = 2 BYE.
LOWER HALF = NB + ½ = 5 + ½ = 3 BYES.

▪ WHEN NO. OF TEAM IS 12 THEN, EACH HALF

WILL HAVE EQUAL NO. OF BYES.
NB/2 = 4/2 = 2 BYES IN EACH HALF.
METHODS OF FIXING BYE
▪ THE FIRST BYE SHALL BE AWARDED TO THE TEAM DRAWN 1ST BYE
LOT & FIXED AT THE LAST PLACE IN THE LOWER HALF.

▪ THE 2ND BYE TO THE 1ST TEAM IN THE 1ST HALF.

▪ THE 3RD BYE TO THE UPPER MOST TEAM OF THE LOWER HALF.

▪ THE 4TH BYE TO THE LOWER MOST TEAM IN THE 1ST HALF.

▪ THE REST ARE AWARDED IN THE SAME SEQUENCE.

If 11 TEAMS ARE THERE
1. - BYE
2.
3. UPPER HALF
4.
5.
6. - BYE
7. - BYE
8.
9. LOWER HALF
10. - BYE
11. - BYE
NUMBER OF TEAMS IN EACH HALF

▪ THE TOTAL PARTICIPATING TEAM ARE EQUALLY DIVIDED INTO TWO

EQUAL HALVES.

▪ FORMULA FOR EVEN NO.OF TEAM = N/2 [ N=NO.OF TEAM ]

EXAMPLE:-1ST WHEN 16 TEAMS ARE PARTICIPATING IN

TOURNAMENT EACH HALF = 8 TEAMS [ N/2 ].

▪ FORMULA FOR ODD NO. OF TEAM = EXAM:- 15 TEAMS

UPPER HALF = N+ ½ = 15 + ½ = 8 TEAMS.

LOWER HALF = N – ½ = 15 – ½ = 7 TEAMS.

NO.OF MATCHES KNOCK-OUT
TOURNAMENT

▪ NO. OF MATCHES = N - 1

▪ IF THERE ARE 11 TEAMS IN TOURNAMENT

THEN N0. OF MATCHES = 11 - 1 = 10.
1. BYE FIXTURE OF SINGLE KNOCK-OUT
2. 1 UPPER HALF

3. 2
4. 6
5. 5 6
6. BYE
7. BYE 6
(winner)
8. 9
9. 9 11
10. BYE LOWER
HALF

11. BYE 11
