are required to check Meteor 600 and 1000 models.
The output level of all generatorsmust be adjustable
by a calibratedcontrol. lt is helpful (though not ess-
ential) if the output impedanceis 50 Q .

Frequency calibration requiresa highly stable signal

source of better than 1 x 10-7error. ldeallyan Off-Air
Frequency Standard should be used. In the U.K. a
Burns Frequency Standard SD-12 locked to
Droitwich transmissionswould be appropriate.

For routine servicing a 20MHz bandwidth Oscillo-

scope, preferably dual beam, with a sensitivity of
5mV must be available, equipped with x10, 10MA
input impedance probes. An accurate Multimeter,
preferably digital, capable of measuring 20V and
500mA must be available.

The following sundry equipment may also be

needed:-

Solderingiron I solder.
Desolderingtool (desolderwick may damage p.c.b.).
Insulatedtrimming tool (or suitable insulatedscrew-
driver).
Small hand tools (pliers, cutters etc. )

power supply (9V 600mA).
Set of 6 Nickel Cadmium cells, 'C' size, with a cap-
acity of 1.2Ah or greater.

signalgenerator).

4. CALIBRATION
The Meteorsare designedto requirea minimumof
calibration.Two adjustmentsonly are required.For
the first, Vcc, it is necessaryto dismantlethe case
(but NOT the front panel) see Section 1c - Dis-
mantling. When the case has been separatedleave
the printedcircuit board assemblyin the caselower.
Attach a meter (6VDC minimum)betweentest pins
P9 (lowest test point below gate time switch) -
ground, and P8 (lowest test point below range
switch) - Vcc. The voltage measuredshould be
5,2V t 0.05V.lf incorrect,adjustRV2,the trimmerat
the top of the front panelassembly,untilwithinlim-
its. This adjustmentis normallyonly neededif power
supplycomponentshavebeenchanged.

The secondadjustment,the crystalclockcalibration,

is requiredif crystaldrift exceedsrequirements.No
dismantlingis requiredfor this, but as the metal
trimmeris at vcc potentialit is ESSENTIALthat an
insulatedtrimmingtool is used.A Vcc short circuitto
ground (via the front panell will damagethe power
supplyand regulationcircuitry.

Normally,a minimum5 minutewarm-upperiodis re-

quiredfor the instrumentto reacha stableoperating
temperature. Connect a frequency standard of
known accuracy(0.1ppm or better) to input 'A'.
Typicallya 1OMHzsourcewouldbe usedandthe foll-
owingdescriptionassumesthis:

Set the front panel controls to filter out,

power on, 10MHzrange,0.'l sec gate, and
adjusttriggerlevelto obtaina stablereading.
Set to 10.00000t 1 digit usingthe trimming
capacitoraccessiblethrough the front panel.
Select 1 sec gate and carefully trim for a
reading between 9.999995and 10.000004.
Typicallyan errorof 0,2ppmcan be achieved,
but the temperature duringcalibrationshould
be notedfor maximumaccuracy.

Power Supply A wide varietyof unrelatedfaultscan

occur if the wrong Vcc is present.lf in doubt about
any fault, ALWAYS checkthat Vcc is within limits,
and repairor recalibrate
if necessary.

Prescalersand preamplifiersThese do not nor-

mally give trouble. lf signal is not being passed,
checkfor presenceof Vcc for the appropriatepart of
the circuitry,and confirm absenceof evidenceof
user servicing(solder splashers,lifted or broken
tracksetc.) beforecheckingvoltagesround the cir-
cuit. The H.F. preamplifier
and prescalers will work
with reducedsensitivitywith a l0MHz input signal,
and allowingthe use of a low cost osciiloscope for
signaltracing.A 10M4,10:1attenuatorprobeshould
be usedfor this.

Main Counter lf only one digit lightsup, but with a

high intensity,suspectthe crystalclock. Checking
the frequencyon pin 25 is quite likelyto load the
clock enoughto stop oscillation.Pin 26 shouldgive
good resultswith a highinrpedance probe.

and causea varietyof problems. The input thresh-
olds on the main counter i.c. lie between3.2 and
4.4Vso aggregateleakageover4pA cangivetrouble,
which may appearas a ghostingdigit or an extra
