Lesson One
0 Describe Learning Objectives
the characteristics of
1 quantitative research. Learners should be able to:

0 Identify
the strengths ans weaknesses
2 of quantitative research.

0 Discuss
the different kinds of
3 quantitative research

0 Evaluate
topics that can be studied
4 quantitatively
Reflect on what you have learned from the previous lesson
on Research by answering the following questions:

1. What were your misconceptions about research prior to taking

practical research?

2. How has the subject practical research affected your attitude

towards research?

3. What skills have you learned from this subject?

What is
Quantitative
Research?
Nature of Quantitative
Research
In this lesson, you will be able to learn about the nature of quantitative
Research, it’s characterisitcs, strengths and weaknesses and the kinds
of quantitative research. It will also make you understand the difference
between quantitative research and qulitative research.
Quantitative Research
The use of quantitative research has greatly influenced
society in various fields. Living in the present world is a lot
easier than it was in the past 100 years. It has greatly
expanded explorations and discoveries, explaining
phenomena, describing population and trends more so in the
fields of science and innovation.

We do not need to spend excessive time preparing for some

of our favorite meals because most of the food items we
have in our storage cabinet are ready to serve in an instant.
The advancement of technology and improvements in our
way of living are brought about research.
Quantitative Research
Qunatitative research designs use numbers in stating
generalizations about a given problem or inquiry in contrast to
qualitative research that hardly uses statitstical treatment in
stating generalizations.

These number are the results of objective scales of

measurements of the units of analysis called variables.

Research findings are subjected to statistical treatment to

determine significant relationships or differences between
variables , the results of which are the bases for
generalization about phenomena.
How Quantitative Research works

To better understand this style of research we need to

break down its major principle.

1. Observing and explaining

something that happens
2. collecting information
3. Analyzing the information
How Quantitative Research works

• Observing and explaining occurrences is

the first step.
• The search for this explanation can be
presented in the form of a question.
• It can be expressed as a hypothesis.
• In the case of a hypothesis the search for
an explanation is made as a statement to
be proved or disproved - depending on
the goals of your research.
How Quantitative Research works
• The collection of information in
quantitative research is what sets it
apart from other types.
• Quantitative research is focused
specially on numerical information,
known as data.
• research requires its conductor to
use mathematical analysis to
investigate what is being
observed, the information
collected must be in numbers.
How Quantitative Research works

• The last step of the research revolves around

using mathematics to analyze the data collected.
This is done with statistics.

Generally, the aim of quantitative research is

to describe patterns, trends and relationships.
Lesson 1: Characteristics of
Quantitative Research
✓ Q uantitative research is objective
✓ It has clearer defined questions
✓ It has structured research intruments
✓ Q uantitative research has numerical data
✓ Q uantitative research has large samples
✓ It can be replicated
Characteristics of Quantitative Research

• Methods or procedures of data gathering include items like age,

gender, educational status, among others, that call for measurable
characteristics of the population
• Standardized instruments guide data collection, thus, ensuring the
accuracy, reliablility, and validity of data.
• Figures, tables or graphs showcase summarized data collected in order
to show trends, relationships or differences among variables. In sum,
charts and tables allow you to see the evidence collected.
Characteristics of Quantitative Research

• A large population yields more reliable data, but principles of random

sampling must be strictly followed to prevent researcher’s bias.
• Quantitative methods can be repeated to verify findings in another
setting, thus, reinforcing validity of findings
• Quantitative research puts emphasis on proof, rather than discovery.
Lesson 1: Strengths and Weaknesses of
Quantitative Research
✓ STRENGTHS
• Quantitative research design is the most reliable and valid way of conducting
results, giving way to a new hypothesis or to disprove it
• Because of a bigger number of the sample of population, the results or
generalization are more reliable and valid.
• Quantitative experiments filter out external factors, if properly designed, and so
the results gained can seen, as real and unbiased, Quantitative experiments are
useful for testing the results gained by a series of qualitative experiments,
leading to a final answer, and a narrowing down of possible directions to follow.
Lesson 1: Strengths and Weaknesses of
Quantitative Research
✓ WEAKNESSES
• Quantitative studies require extensive statistical treatment, requiring stringent
standards, more so with confirmation of results. When ambiguities in some
findings surface, retesting and refinement of the design call for another
investment in time and resources to polish the results.

invesment in time and sources to polish the results .
Lesson 1: Strengths and Weaknesses of
Quantitative Research

✓ WEAKNESSES
• Quantitative methods also tend to turn out only proved or unproven results,
leaving little room for uncertainty, or grey areas. For the social sciences,
education, anthropology and psychology, human nature is a lot more complex
than just a simple yes or no response.
Quantitative VS Qualitative
Base on your own experience in Practical Research 1 and from previous reading, compare
and contrast the two images.
Lesson 1: Kinds of Quantiative
Research Designs
Research design refers to the overall strategy that you choose in order to
integrate the different components of the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby
ensuring you will effectively address the research problem.
Furthermore, a research design constitutes the blueprint for the selection,
measurement and analysis of data. The research problem determines the research design
you should use.
Quantitative methods emphasize objective meassurements and the statistics
mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and
surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.
Quantitative Research Designs

Quantitative research designs are generally classified experimental and non-experimental as the
following matrix shows:
