CV Assignment

This document provides the details and requirements for Assignment 1 of the course Design of Concrete Structures. It includes 9 tasks to complete related to the design and analysis of a reinforced concrete beam in a 4-story building. Key information provided includes the beam dimensions, material properties, and loads. Students are asked to determine steel cover, trial beam dimension, develop bending moment and shear force diagrams, check the trial dimension, calculate reinforcement, design shear reinforcement, check deflection, and provide structural details. A second question asks students to discuss how soil type affects earthquake loads and provide a case study analyzing failure of a RC structure and remedial solutions.

CV323: Design of Concrete Structures

Assignment 1
Total Marks: 130 marks
Weighting: 4%
Due Date: Friday 25th August 2023 @ 11:59 pm

Question 1
Consider the isometric view of the four-story reinforced concrete building frame as shown in
figure 1 below. The general layout of the 2nd floor slab, sectional view y – y and sectional view
x – x is shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4, respectively. During construction, the concrete beam will
be cast monolithically with the concrete floor slab.
The design parameter of the structure is as follows:
1. Dimension of reinforced concrete column = 250mm x 2500mm
2. Specified concrete strength (fc’) = 20MPa
3. Superimposed Dead Load on slab (G) = 3.00 kPa 4.
4. Superimposed Live Load on slab (Q) = 7.0 kPa
5. L1 = 6500mm
6. L2 = 6000 mm
7. L3 = 5000 mm
8. Floor slab thickness = 175 mm
9. Density of the reinforced concrete = 2400kg/m3 .
Answer the following:
Task Description Mark
1 Determine the steel cover of the reinforcing steel bars due to durability 2 marks
requirement.
2 Determine a trial beam dimension that can safely carry the self-weight of 3 marks
the beam including the super imposed external loads.
3 Develop the bending moment diagram and shear force diagram using AS 10 marks
3600. The beam to be designed is marked in Figure 2 - General layout.
(The student should verify if the Simplified method of AS3600 can be
applied in the calculation of the shear force and bending moment in the
beam.

1
4 Check if the given trial dimension of the beam is too big or small to carry 15 marks
the load
5 Check the value of M*(min) if less than all the positive and negative 10 marks
moments for analysis of positive and negative reinforcement in the beam
6 Using the re-calculated beam dimension in Part 3, determine the required 20 marks
value of positive and negative flexural reinforcement in the beam.
7 Design the necessary shear reinforcement in the beam 20 marks
8 Calculate the long-term deflection of the beam to satisfy the requirements 10 marks
of Clause 8.5.3.2 AS3600 2009
9 Draw to proper scale the structural details of the layout of the main 20 marks
reinforcing steel bars and shear reinforcement of the beam being designed
Total 110 marks

Question 2
a) Why is it necessary to account for the soil type in determining earthquake loads? (5
Marks)
b) Choose a case study from a report or journal that discuss the failure of reinforced
concrete structures due to one of the dynamic loads discussed in our lectures. Explain
in detail damages sustained by the RC structure and what remedial solutions was
adopted to make the structure safe. Min Word Limit: 500 Words
Guide to answer 2b
I. Details of report chosen
II. Description of the RC Structure and the cause of the failure
III. Discuss the remedial designs adopted.
IV. Discuss which provision in the AS3600 or relevant ensures that such failure factors are
considered.
