Grade 3 ADJECTIVES

Words that describe nouns or pronouns and add meaning to them are
called Adjectives or Describing Words.
For example -1) The clever crow drank the water.
Here,’ crow’ is a noun and ‘clever ‘is an adjective.
2). He is a kind man.
Here ‘man’ is a noun and ‘kind’ is an adjective.
Kinds of Adjectives

1) Adjective of Quality – It tells us the kind of a
person or a thing.
Example – big, old, beautiful, shy etc.
a) Elephant is a big animal.
2) Adjective of Quantity – It tells us how much a thing we are talking
about.
Example – little, some, few, enough, more, all etc.
a) He had little money with him.
3) Adjective of Number – It answers the question – ‘How many?’
Example – one, three, four, etc. or first, second etc.
a) We counted twenty students in the class.
b) The second notebook in the bundle is mine.
4) Adjective of Colour – It tells us about the colour of the thing.
Example – I have a red cap.

Degree of Comparison
Adjectives can be used to compare people,
animals, places, things and groups.

Generally we get the comparative and superlative


degree form of an adjective by adding –er and –
est to its base form.i.e positive degree.

sweet sweeter sweetest
soft softer softest
Adjectives which end in e, form their comparative and superlative
degree form by the addition of –r and –st.

brave braver bravest
fine finer finest
For adjectives ending in y, the y is changed into I before adding –er
and –est for the comparative and superlative forms.

Sometimes, for adjectives ending in a single consonant such as t, d, g,
n, etc., the last consonant is doubled before adding –er or –est to get
the comparative and superlative degree forms of the words.

For longer adjectives, more is used for the comparative degree form
and most for the superlative degree form.
