PMI-BA Tubing Anchor Catcher

INTRODUCTION
The PMI “BA” acts as a tubing anchor to maintain
tension in the tubing string and as a tubing catcher to
prevent parted pipe from falling to the bottom of the
well.

Applications:
Most rod pumping applications where it is important to
maintain tension in the tubing to:
• Increase production
• Reduce Wear on rods, tubing and casing
• Reduce down time and operating cost

Features:
• Easy Set.. Rotate left to set, right to release
• Emergency Release.. Straight pull shear
release for extreme well conditions
• Catches parted tubing
• Corrosion resistant stainless steel drag springs.
Other surfaces are protected with a zinc
phosphate coating.

IN THE TUBING STRING

Position the Tubing Anchor directly below the pump and screw the seating nipple into the Top Sub of
the Tubing Anchor. Should it become necessary for the pump to be located beneath the anchor, the
tensile strength of the mandrel and the bore through the anchor should be taken into consideration.

DRAG SPRINGS
NEVER use the springs as a handle for carrying, it is possible to bend them and affect their ability to
perform properly.

RUNNING IN
Turn the tubing to the right approximately every10 joints while going in the well. This keeps the slips
teeth from dulling. Ensure each joint is properly tightened to avoid …….

SETTING
Space out for calculated stretch and tension. (See calculation section)
1. At the desired setting depth, rotate the tubing to the left, 5 to 8 turns, with hand wrenches until
the slips contact the casing
2. Maintain left-hand torque while alternately pulling strain and setting down several times to work
all play out of the tool. During this slip setting operation, the strain pulled should be at least
TM
LS
equal to the final strain that will be applied when the tubing is landed, and full tubing set-down
O

weight should be applied.

TO

3. Release the torque and continue working the tubing to remove any residual torque. Apply the
required amount of tubing tension as determined from the calculations section of this tech unit.
IL
IO

4. Pull the calculated stretch and install the well head.

NOTE: Tubing tension should always be applied in inches (mm) of stretch. Possible friction
PM

between the tubing and the casing may distort the weight indicator readings.

RELEASING
1. Release applied tension on the tubing string and slack off slightly onto the tubing anchor. This
allows the lower cone to completely retract before the slips lose grip of the casing. Improper
retraction of the lower cone will dull the slips teeth from dragging against the casing.
2. In addition, the anchor can be released without compression or even with the tubing string
in tension. Rotate the tubing to the right, 5 to 8 revolutions at the anchor. This will retract the
cones from the slips and allow the slips to move back into the housing. When the anchor is
free, rotate a few more turns to the right before starting out of the hole. It is a good practice
to take an occasional right hand turn while coming out to ensure against dulling the slips.
Additional right hand turns is not harmful to the anchor.

EMERGENCY RELEASE
If the anchor is unable to release under normal conditions, pick up against the anchor to shear the
emergency pins in the lower cone. An upstrain greater than the total shear strength of the shear pins
and the total weight of the tubing will be necessary.

ASSEMBLY
1. Apply a heavy coat of stiff grease to body threads,
cone threads, and between the bottom cone and its
cone sleeve. Recommended Grease: Shell Darina II or 1
equivalent.
2. Screw the upper cone (7) onto the upper end of the
mandrel (2).
3. Screw the body nut (6) on the body above the upper cone.
Secure it in place so that the top of the nut is flush with the
top of the body threads. Tighten the screw (4) in the body 2
nut VERY TIGHT! 7” and Larger: Lock nuts are held by 5
3
set screws (4) tightened into a groove of the body.
4. Attach the coiled slip springs to the slips and bend the 6
ends closed with pliers.
5. Stand the body sub-assembly upside down on floor. Insert 7
the slip sub-assembly (9) into the lower end of the housing
(8) and align with milled windows. Slide top of housing 17
8
over the body from the bottom end. Match up the internal

TM
splines at the top of the housing with the grooves in the
LS
upper cone. Turn the housing to back the cone up against
O
18
the lock nut. 4-1/2” Only: Cone is not grooved, but is
TO

9
tapped for pipe plugs.
IL

6. Screw the cap (3) into the top of the housing by hand until
IO

it bottoms. Insert the cap pipe plug (5) into the split of the
PM

cap, and tighten. 4-1/2” Only: Uses a set screw (4).

7. Grease the outside of the lower cone sleeve (15). Line 12
it up inside the lower cone (12), and insert the required
number of shear pins, (5,000 lb. per pin). NOTE: Shear
pins should be equally spaced around the cone.
8. Screw the lower cone unit into the lower end of the body. 13
Line up the tapped holes in the cone with the slots in the
housing. The plugs should clear the bottom of the slots
by approximately 1/8”. Tighten the cone pipe plugs (13) 15
securely, so the tops of the plugs are below the outer
surface of the housing. 4-1/2” Only: Uses plugs in the
upper cone.
9. Install drag springs (18) and drag spring screws (17) VERY
TIGHT. 5-1/2” and Larger: Drag springs attach to the
16
housing above the slips. 4-1/2” and 5” Sizes: Drag springs
attach to the lower cone, and requires lock washers.
NOTE: When the anchor is to be used 8,000 ft. (2,438
meters) or deeper, two springs, one atop the other is
recommended.
10. Turn the housing in the direction of release, and slam it
into the stop several times to be certain the body nut will
not move.
11. Install the top and bottom subs (1 and 16) and tighten very
tight.
