1) One (1) characteristic of each of the fours learning theories that you consider

significant and why.

The significant characteristic that can be considered in the learning theory Behaviourism, is

the use of stimuli and response to generate learning in the classroom. This is effective

because it conditions students to behave in a progressive manner using the operant

conditioning technique. In Cognitivism, learning is acquired by improving the mental

capability or processes of the student. Therefore, this is important because this learning

approach actively engages the student in understanding or acquiring information.

Constructivism theory provides an avenue for facilitators to guide learners on building on

their preexisting knowledge. This is significant because it shows that through classroom

interaction students can incorporate new knowledge with their level of understanding. An

important characteristic in the Connectivism theory is that learning takes place by making a

connection with ideas, through individuals and other personal learning networks. This is very

important because it enhances not only individual learning, but can be beneficial to the entire

network of learners (McDonald & West, 2021).

2) Two (2) two differences among Connectivism, Constructivism and Cognitivism

that you consider important.

An important difference to consider among the learning theories Connectivism,

Constructivism and Cognitivism is the fact that Connectivism focuses on self-directed

learning through a shared network, while in Constructivism learning is based on building on

personal experience or knowledge, whereas in Cognitivism, learning is mental or internal

process. It is important to consider these differences because, this is important when looking

at factors that can influence these learning theories. For example, Connectivism,

Constructivism and Cognitivism can be influenced by factors such as the diversity of the

network, engagement or participation, and previous experiences respectively. Another

important difference is that in Connectivism learning occurs through distribution of content

within a network, whereas in Constructivism learning is personally constructed by each

learner, and in Cognitivism learning occurs internally through the processing of new

information. Therefore this difference is important to be aware of when preparing courses to

be facilitated in the classroom.

3) As an educator within the Caribbean eLearning environment, reflect how you

would apply a specific learning theory or a combination of learning theories that you

consider relevant to your teaching practice in order to assist your students to improve

academic success.

As an educator, a combination of learning theories will be applied in order to ensure the

academic success of students. A holistic approach will be incorporated because there may be

differences in learning styles or abilities of individual learners. Therefore, the use of

behaviourism will be explored, with the use of positive reinforcement, and Connectivism, by

building connections to information to increase the knowledge of students via technological

means. The Constructivism learning theory will be used to provide students with new

information so that they can interpret or give meaning through their prior experiences.

(Loveless, 2023). Cognitivism will be used to design instruction to ensure that learners attain

more knowledge than they have already acquired in their mind (McDonald & West, 2021).

This will be done by assessment of their prior knowledge on the topic area, by discussing the

topic, to determine their level of understanding, so that new information about the topic can

be internalized by the learner.
