Recommendation Test For Media Convertor

This document proposes additional reliability testing procedures for media converters. It recommends testing the bit error rate which was not included in previous approved testing procedures. The document outlines three test procedures: [1] Stand Alone test to check the media converter alone, [2] Local test to check the media converter connected to an MDFO, and [3] Link test to check an end-to-end connection between media converters through an MDFO. The procedures involve setting up fiber loops and connections to a data tester to perform bit error rate tests for 10 minutes or more to check for zero errors. This helps ensure quality and reliability of signals transmitted through the media converters.

Reliability Test for Media converter

In order to examine quality of the signal for 2MB OR 64KBPS from media
convertor the below mentioned testing procedure can be added to our
approved procedure for media converter.

Recommended Tests:
The following additional testing are recommended during media converter
commissioning, As per our approved testing procedure there is no any test
to check bit error rate.

Test Procedure:

A. Stand Alone Test :

ST TX

Data
Converter
Tester
IEEE 37.94
Multi
Mode ST RX
fiber
loop

Requirement for the testing:

1. Multi-mode fiber loop
2. Data tester (Example: JDSU)

Steps:
1. Check DC power is available & MC is powered on.
2. Connect MM fiber (ST-ST) loop to TX & RX port of MC.
3. Connect MC codir cable- cat 6 shielded twisted pair from the Mc to
the Data tester & terminate properly
4. Now start the device for testing BERT for Minimum 10 Min
5. If the results is zero error after 10 min then Stand-alone test is ok’.

IEEE 37.94 Data Tester
G.703
ST RX

Requirement for the testing:

1. Multi-mode fiber loop

2. Data tester

Steps:
1. Check DC power is available & MC is powered on.
2. Connect MM fiber (ST-ST) loop to TX & RX port of MC
3. Connect MC Codir cable- cat 6 shielded twisted pair from the Mc
to the G703 terminal block & terminate properly.
4. Configure a cross connection between Ch1 & Ch2 of G703.
5. Now Connect Ch1 with MC, Similarly Ch2 is connect to Data
Tester with Codir Configuration
6. Start the device for testing BERT for Minimum 10 Min
7. If the results is zero error after 10 min then Local test is ok’.

C. Link Test Media converter with MDFO :

Requirement for the testing:

1. Multi-mode fiber loop
2. Data tester

Steps:
1. Check DC power is available & MC is powered on.
2. Connect MM fiber (ST-ST) loop to TX & RX port of MC
3. Connect MC Codir cable- cat 6 shielded twisted pair from the Mc to
the G703 terminal block & terminate properly.
4. Configure a cross connection between Ch1 & Ch2 of G703. (Repeat
step 1 to 4 for both ends)
5. Now Connect Ch1 with MC, Similarly Ch2 is connect to Data Tester
with Codir Configuration.
6. At Remote end Ch1 & Ch2 is connected to MC
7. Start the device for BERT for Minimum 10 Min
8. If the results is zero error after 10 min then End to End test is ok’.

Depending on the different situation or availability of the
telecom equipment these procedure can be modified.

Advantages:

1. Media converter can test bit error rate which was not available in
approved procedures.
2. Media converter is very important for differential protection for this
reason reliability test is recommended.
