a) Explain the concept of ‘Communicative Competence’ as proposed by Dell Hymes.

Solution:

Dell Hymes introduced the concept of communicative competence as an extension of


Noam Chomsky’s theory of linguistic competence. According to Hymes, language competence
alone is not sufficient to fully understand and use language effectively in real-life
communication. Communicative competence takes into account the socio-cultural aspects of
language use and emphasizes the ability to apply language knowledge in approp1iate and
meaningful ways.

1) Grammatical Competence: Refers to knowledge of the rules and structures of language,


including vocabulary, syntax and morphology. It includes understanding how to form
grammatically correct sentences and how to use language accurately.

2) Sociolinguistics competence: This component focuses on the social and cultural aspects of
language use. It involves the understanding and appropriate use of language in different
social contexts, considering factors such as social norms, status, roles and cultural
conventions. Sociolinguistics competence enables individuals to adapt their language
choices and behavior based on a specific communication situation.

3) Discourse competence: Discourse refers to the organization and coherence of extended


sections of language beyond individual sentences. Discourse competence includes
understanding how to effectively structure and convey information use cohesive devices,
engage in tum-taking, and maintain coherence in conversation or written texts.

4) Strategic competence: Strategic competence refers to the ability to use communication


strategies to overcome any impairments or difficulties in understanding. It involves using
various techniques Such as paraphrasing, using gestures, asking for clarification or using
filler expressions to improve communication and compensate for any limitations in language
skills.

Overall communicative competence emphasizes not only the knowledge of language stuctures,
but also the ability to effectively apply this knowledge in real communication situations" taking
into account social and cultural factors. It emphasizes the importance of context, interaction and
pragmatic aspects of language use.

b) How did Dell Hymes's work influence the development of the communicative approach
to language acquisition?

Dell Hymes’ work had a significant influence on the development of the communicative
approach to language acquisition. Hymes' concept of communicative competence, which he
introduced in the 1960s, challenged the traditional view of language learning that focused only
on grammatical competence. His ideas emphasized the importance of understanding language in
its social and cultural context and how language is used as a means of communication in real-life
situations.

Hymes argued that language learning should not only involve mastering grammar rules
and vocabulary, but also the ability to use language appropriately and effectively in different
social and cultural settings. This perspective shifted the focus from a purely structural approach
to a functional and communicative approach.

The communicative approach, influenced by Hymes’ work, aims to develop students’


ability to use language for meaningful communication. It emphasizes the importance of
integrating all language skills (listening, speaking. reacting and writing) in authentic contexts.
This approach encourages students to actively engage in communicative activities such as role-
