Assignment 5

This document contains an assignment on electromagnetism from the Department of Physics at IIT Kharagpur. The assignment contains 5 questions with multiple parts each. Question 1 deals with calculating current density inside a wire and magnetic field inside and outside a cylindrical conductor. Question 2 covers magnetic dipole moment of a rotating wire and magnetic scalar potential. Question 3 is about the magnetic field due to a magnetic moment and induced current in a loop from an approaching magnet. Questions 4 and 5 contain additional problems involving bound current densities, magnetization, Maxwell's equations, and electromagnetic waves.

Assignment 5

1. (a) The variation of the volume current density inside a wire of radius R is given as,

J = J0 (1 − e−λr )ẑ. Here J0 and λ are two constants. Calculate the total current passing
through the wire.

(b) Inside a cylindrical conductor of radius R the magnetic field is given as B ⃗ = B0 rR−1 ϕ̂,
⃗ = B0 Rr−1 ϕ̂. Calculate J⃗ inside and outside of the conductor.
where outside it is B

⃗ at the focus
(c) An infinite wire currying a current I is bent in a form of a parabola. Find B
of the parabola. Take the distance of the focus from the vortex as a.

(d) Consider a charge distribution ρ(⃗r) is moving with a constant velocity v⃗0 . Show that
magnetic field produced by this system is B⃗ = (v⃗0 × E(⃗
⃗ r))c−2 , when E(⃗
⃗ r) is the electric

field produced by ρ(⃗r) at rest.

2. (a) A straight of length 2l carries a line charge density λ . The wire rotates with an angular
velocity ω about an axis passing through its mid-point and perpendicular its length. Show
that the magnitude of the magnetic dipole moment is λωl3 /3.

(b) If the current density is zero ( J⃗ = 0) in some region of space then ∇

⃗ can
be written as a gradient of some potential ϕm which is called the magnetic scalar potential.

Show that, ϕm = 4π r3
.

(c) A thin disk of radius a carrying surface charge density σ is rotating with a constant angular
velocity ω about its symmetry axis (say z-axis) perpendicular to the disk. Consider a uniform
magnetic field B⃗ = B0 ĵ. Show that the torque acting on the disk is of magnitude πσωB0 a4 /4.
3. (a) Show that, the magnetic field due to the magnetic moment m
⃗ can be written as,
⃗ =
B µ0 m
(2 cos θr̂ + sin θθ̂).
4πr3

(b) A small magnet of moment m ⃗ is approaching towards a closed loop of radius R along
its axis with a constant speed v0 . Show that when the magnet is at a distance x from the
2
loop, the current induced in the loop as, i = 2R3µs (x
0 mv0 xR
2 +R2 )5/2 . Here Rs is the resistance of the loop.

(c) Show that the magnetic dipole moment is independent of the choice of origin.

4. (a) A cylindrical wire made of linear magnetic material of permeability µ has a current I dis-
tributed uniformly over its cross section of radius R. Claculate all the bound corrent densities
and determine the total current.

(b) A long cylinder of radius R carries a magnatization M ⃗ = λr2 ϕ̂, where λ is a constant.

(c) Consider a plane interface of two media of permeability of µ1 and µ2 . If B
side makes angles θ1 and θ2 with the normal of the interface, show that, µ1 cot θ1 = µ2 cot θ2 .
Assume there is no surface current.

5. (a) Suppose ϕL and A ⃗ L satisfies the Lorenz gauge constraint. What equation f must satisfy
⃗′ = A
to ensure that A ⃗ L − ∇f and ϕ′ = ϕL − ∂f are Lorenz gauge potentials also.
∂t

⃗ n22 ∂ 2 E2⃗ = 0,
(b) Show that Maxwell’s wave equation inside a dielectric medium is given by ∇2 E− c ∂t
where n is the refarctive index of the medium that is isotropic, homogeneous and non-
magnetic.

⃗ = x̂E0 cos(kz − ωt) + ŷE0 sin(kz − ωt),

(c) The electrc filed associated with an EM wave is, E
where E0 is constant. Find H ⃗ and S.
