MAT049 Course Outline
MAT049 – Pre-Calculus
(4 Units – 72 Hrs)
Course Description: This course bridges Basic Mathematics and Calculus and completes
the foundational knowledge on Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. This course provides
students with conceptual understanding and computational skills that are crucial for Basic
Calculus.
Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Illustrate the different types of conic sections: parabola, ellipse, circle, hyperbola,
and degenerate cases.
2. Recognize the equation and important characteristics of the different types of
conic sections.
3. Determine the solutions of systems of nonlinear equations using techniques such
as substitution, elimination, and graphing.
4. Illustrate a series.
5. Differentiate a series from a sequence.
6. Solve problems using mathematical induction and the Binomial Theorem.
7. Illustrate the unit circle and the relationship between the linear and angular
measures of a central angle in a unit circle.
8. Solve problems involving circular functions.
9. convert the coordinates of a point from rectangular to polar systems and vice
versa.
