If the above Standards are not exactly convenient, the cables may be manufactured and
tested in accordance with other equivalent standards. These standards shall be annexed to
the CONTRACTOR's bid and submitted to ADWEA/ENGINEER for approval.
The cables termination and jointing kits shall fully comply with Abu Dhabi Water and
Electricity Authority (ADWEA) requirements.
3. SITE CONDITIONS
3.1 General
For general climatic conditions applicable to the project installations, refer to Specification for
General Technical Requirements.
The design and construction of the MV cables shall be in accordance with specified
standards. The cables shall be rated for the specified frequency and voltage as per data
sheet and drawings and shall be capable of continuous operation at system continuous
deviation of up to and including the following percentages of the .nominal values :
- Voltage : + 10%
- Frequency : + 5%

Title: SPECIFICATION FOR MEDIUM VOLTAGE CABLES
MV cables (interstitial conductors) shall be sized for the required fault rating:
4.2.1 Conductor
The conductor shall be of plain annealed copper as per IEC 60228. The conductor shall be
circular, stranded and compacted.
4.2.3 Insulation
The insulation shall be extruded cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and as per Table 2 and
other requirements specified in IEC 60502-2. Nominal thickness of XLPE of XLPE insulation
shall be as per Table-6 provided in IEC 60502-2.
Metallic screen shall be applied over the core of single core cable or on each core of 3 core
cables as specified in data sheet and shall consist of one layer of plain annealed copper tape
of thickness designed for specified earth fault level.
4.2.5 Laying up
The laying up of cores of cables with necessary non-hygroscopic fillers, binders etc. shall be
as per IEC 60502-2.
The inner covering of extruded PVC compound shall be laid over the above to provide a
bedding for the metallic armour.

Title: SPECIFICATION FOR MEDIUM VOLTAGE CABLES
For MV cable armouring double layer of galvanised steel tape having 0.8mm thickness shall
be provided.
An extruded separation layer shall be provided between the armour and the metallic screen
as per the relevant clauses of IEC 60502-2.
The overall serving shall consist of extruded PVC over the armour. The material of sheath
thickness, and tests shall be as per IEC 60502-2.
The voltage designation, standard (BS/IEC) year of manufacture, cable size, number of cores,
and VENDOR's name etc. shall be embossed on the PVC serving.
Immediately after the specified works tests both ends of every length of cable shall be sealed
and shall remain sealed until installed in its final position.
Sealing shall be effected by means of an approved heat shrinkable cap fitted over each end.
The end which is left projecting from the drum for the purpose of tests shall be protected to
avoid damage to the sheathing during transport.
The cable drums shall be arranged to take a round spindle and be lagged with strong closely
fitted battens so as to prevent damage to the cable.
Means shall be provided to prevent adhesion between turns and layers of the cable on the
drum and between the cable and the drum or container at such temperatures as may be
experienced during transit to site, at site, before laying or in storage.
Each drum shall bear a distinguishing number for identification purposes either branded or
neatly chiselled on the outside of the flange. Particulars of the cable, i.e voltage, length,
conductor size, finish, length number, gross and net weights shall be clearly shown on one
flange of the drum.
The cable drums and protective battens shall be treated with anti-termite protection.
