    London

    London is the capital of GB, its political, economic and cultural centre. It is one of the
    largest cities int he world. Its population is more than 9 million people. London is
    situated on the river Thames. The city is very old and beautiful.
    London is divided into the following parts:
    1) the City – the oldest part of London, financial and business centre. Here are the
    biggest banks and offices of England and the biggesr one is the Bank of England.
    You can find here St.Paul’s Cathedral which was destroyed during the Great Fire
    in 1666 and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren. Fleet Street is also in the City and it’s
    famous for newspaper offices of „Financial Times”, „Daily Telegraph” and some
    others. Perhaps the oldest building is the Tower of London. It was used as a
    fortress, a royal palace, and a prison. Now it is a museum where the Crown
    Jewels are kept;
    2) the West End – which is known as a fashionable shopping and entertainment
    centre of London. Here are big shops, hotels, museums, art galleries, theaters,
    cinemas, parks, gardens, squares, etc. The Piccadilly Circus is the heart of London;
    3) the East End – it is the industrial centre. Factories and shops are situated here. It
    is the district of the working people;
    4) Westminster – the administrative centre, the place of government offices. Here
    are the Houses of Parliament, the Big Ben, Westminster Abbey.

    Some other places of interest in London:

     Buckinghan Palace – the Queen lives here;


     Trafalgar Square – it is in the West End. The Trafalgar Square is the geographical
    centre of London. It was named in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory over
    Napoleon int he battle of Trafalgar. The tall Nelson’s Column stands in the middle
    of the square;
     The British Museum – the biggest museum in London, it is famous for its library;
     Downing Street 10 has been the home of the British Prime Minister since the
    middle of the 18th century.

    London has a number of nice parks and gardens, such as the Hyde Park, the largest and
    the most fashionable park in London with the Serpentine lake.
    The oldest underground railway system called „the tube”, is one of the largest in the
    world. The famous red „double-deckers” are typical of London as well.
    So, London, rich in history and culture, parks and shops, always welcomes its visitor. I
    would like to travel to London at least once in my life.
