Use Literature Matrix Synthesize Research

This document discusses using a literature matrix to summarize and synthesize research. It recommends setting up the matrix as a spreadsheet with columns for the author, date, research question, theoretical framework, methods, findings, conclusions, limitations, implications, themes, and other issues. For each study, summarize the key information across the row. Then synthesize the body of literature by analyzing the columns for differences, commonalities, strengths, weaknesses, and themes. The analysis should identify implications, gaps, and questions for future research. The matrix provides an organized way to comprehensively review and evaluate the literature.

 There are many ways to approach a research topic.

 Summarize each study across the row
 Synthesize “the body” of literature in columns
 Purposely look for differences and commonalities in the literature
 Analyze differences, strengths, weaknesses, controversies, themes that emerge.
 What are the implications of your analysis?

 What would you suggest for future research? For practice? What is missing? Where are the gaps in the literature? What new questions should be asked?
