He drifted for days, passing through several towns as firefighters and others tried unsuccessfully to rescue him. 2) The dog was carried over 75 miles into the Baltic Sea, where his ice floe had shrunk to the size of a picnic table. He was spotted by scientists on a research ship. 3) With difficulty due to the dog's fear and slippery conditions, the crew of the research ship was able to pull the dog to safety using a raft. They cared for and warmed the dog, naming him Baltic. 4) Baltic recovered and became the mascot of the research ship.
