2.2.3 Types of Web Application

• Front End

Front-end, also known as the client-side, refers to the part of a software application that
the user interacts with directly. In the context of web development, the front-end is thevisible
and interactive portion of a website or web application that users see and interact with through
their web browsers.

Front-end development involves designing and implementing the user interface (UI) and
user experience (UX) of a web application, ensuring that it is visually appealing, intuitive, and
responsive across different devices and screen sizes.
• Key components of front-end development include:

1. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language): HTML provides the basic structure of a web page.
It uses elements like headings, paragraphs, lists, images, and links to organize and present
content on the web page.

2. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets): CSS is used to style the HTML elements, controlling the
layout, fonts, colors, spacing, and other visual aspects of the web page. It allows developers
to customize the appearance of the user interface.

3. JavaScript: JavaScript is a programming language used to add interactivity and dy-

namic behavior to web pages. It enables developers to create features like animations, form
validations, and interactive elements that respond to user actions.

• Business Logic

Business logic in web applications refers to the set of rules, processes, and operations that
define how the application functions and processes data to meet its specific business
requirements. It represents the core functionality and decision-making processes that drive
the behavior of the web application based on user interactions and data input.
A Report on Industrial Training

Figure 2.2: Front end

Here are some common aspects of business logic in web applications:

1. Data Validation: Web applications often receive input from users through forms and
other input mechanisms. Business logic is responsible for validating this data to ensure it
meets certain criteria and constraints. For example, it may check that required fields are
filled out, numeric values are within valid ranges, and dates are in the correct format.

2. Data Processing and Manipulation: Business logic processes and manipulates data en- tered
by users or retrieved from databases. It may involve calculations, transformations, and other
operations necessary to generate meaningful results or to implement specific business
workflows.

3. Workflow Management: Web applications often involve complex business workflows

that require multiple steps to be executed in a specific order. Business logic manages these
workflows, ensuring that the appropriate steps are taken based on user interactions or system
events.

Figure 2.3: Business Logic

• Database

In a web application, a database is a critical component that stores and manages data
needed for the application’s functionality. It serves as a persistent and organized storage
system where information can be stored, retrieved, updated, and deleted by the application
as required. Databases are essential for web applications that require data persistence and
dynamic content.

Here are some key points about databases in web applications:

1. Data Storage: Web applications often need to handle large amounts of data, such as
user information, product details, posts, comments, and various other entities. Databases
provide a structured way to store this data, ensuring it is organized, searchable, and easily
accessible.

2. Data Retrieval: When a user interacts with a web application, the application needs
to retrieve relevant data from the database to present it on the user’s screen. For example,
A Report on Industrial Training

when a user logs in, the application fetches the user’s details from the database to personalize
their experience.

3. Data Manipulation: Databases support operations like inserting, updating, and deleting
data, allowing web applications to modify the stored information based on user actions or
system events. For instance, when a user places an order on an e-commerce website, the
application stores the order details in the database.

Industry

7.1 HTML
The Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML is the standard markup language for docu-
ments designed to be displayed in a web browser. It can be assisted by technologies such as
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and scripting languages such as JavaScript.

Web browsers receive HTML documents from a web server or from local storage and render
the documents into multimedia web pages. HTML describes the structure of a web page
semantically and originally included cues for the appearance of the document.

7.2 CSS

7.2.1 Inline CSS

We can apply CSS in a single element by inline CSS technique. The inline CSS is also a
method to insert style sheets in HTML document. This method mitigates some advantages
of style sheets so it is advised to use this method sparingly.

7.2.2 Internal CSS

The internal style sheet is used to add a unique style for a single document. It is defined
in ¡ head ¿ section of the HTML page inside the ¡ style ¿ tag.

7.2.3 External CSS

The external style sheet is generally used when you want to make changes on multiple
pages. It is ideal for this condition because it facilitates you to change the look of the entire
web.
