Why are most goalkeepers
preoccupied with
defending the goal line?
Can the player on the ball score?
The GK must ask the question continually throughout the game.

A constant readjustment is needed in relation

to the ever changing position of the ball on the eld.

There is no generic starting position for a GK if the ball is

situated in a certain part of the eld.

Each goalkeeper will take up a position that is

comfortable for them.

DESIGNING SESSIONS
TO INCLUDE YOUR
GOALKEEPER

Is Goalkeeping important for you?

Is the GK a priority in your session design?

Who recruits their Goalkeeper first &

prioritises this position?

Who has a Goalkeeper coach or even

someone who can work with the GK’s?
Is Goalkeeping important for you?

Who includes the Goalkeeper in the

session in a practical way?

Who just throws the Goalkeeper in the goals at the

end of the session and has everyone shoot at them?

Who has spent even a little time trying to

understand the Goalkeeper position properly?
Is Goalkeeping important for you?

Good strikers win games but good

goalkeepers win championships.

All championship winning teams

have great goalkeepers.
Change the narrative around
goalkeeping.
Make them a priority rather than an after thought.

Design sessions to incorporate the goalkeeper.

Goalkeeper only sessions for the whole team

at a young age.

Look for qualities of a goalkeeper at a young age

and nurture them into the position.
How do we incorporate the Goalkeeper?

Goalkeeper can be running without a ball and

calling out a players name who kicks the ball
into his/her hands.

Goalkeeper runs around and is allowed to go

into a 5 point block or smother to win the ball
from the players running with the ball.

Goalkeeper dribbles and taps to the side and

dives on ball as players perform a skill.

Goalkeeper acts as a bouncer on outside of grid.

How do we incorporate the Goalkeeper?

Goalkeeper in between two poles instead of of the

small goals.
Players need to score by the following:

• Push pass - Scoop for GK.

• Drive or curl - cup and w for GK.
• Run past to score - 1 v 1 or GK.

Goalkeeper can then roll out to his/her team to run

with the ball or throw into goal the other end.

Everyone can have a go at goalkeeping.

Goalkeeper has to protect both small goals or make 1

big one.

Everyone can have a go at goalkeeping.

How do we incorporate the Goalkeeper?

Goalkeeper can use feet or hands

during the passing pattern.

Go one way and add goal for the 3 to turn and shoot.

Split the pattern into 2 and have 2 GK’s working.

Players must hit the GK’s hands to start and then add a
restriction. Perhaps work on a GK topic?
How do we incorporate the Goalkeeper?

Goalkeepers on the ends acting as bounce

players will be the most common.

As the Yellow team hits the 9 in the middle zone

1 player will run off and receive the ball and
shoot towards the Orange keeper in between
poles or a goal. Then play starts at Orange
keeper.

This not only incorporates the goalkeeper but

also makes it a little more fun for the outfield
players as they get to shoot.
