An undergraduate research manuscript submitted to the faculty of the Department of


Hospitality Management, Cavite State University – Imus Campus in partial fulfillment of the
requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management prepared under
the supervision of Ms. Jizza Mae V. Mondol.

INTRODUCTION

Income is an economic resource which came from jobs, investments, and government

programs that shapes the choices of living, education, food, medical care and many more

(Braveman, et al. 2011). Income is one of the most crucial economic resources of humanity.

Aside of surpassing the living conditions of people, but also it represents as a manifestation

of someone’s living position in society (Boyce et al, 2010).

According to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) 2017, the average worker in tourism

and hospitality sector earns ₱16,000.00 monthly. Thus, it is said that the workers in tourism

and hospitality sector does not necessarily requiring to have college degree, however, there

are more college degree holders who works in this sector and earn the same amount of

monthly income. In addition, majority of tourism and hospitality workers often receive monthly

income ranging of ₱5,000 or less than ₱10,000 through which it is inadequately to support

household necessities and other responsibilities or needs of an individual (De Castro, 2017).

Satisfaction was described as an act of fulfilling the needs and wants of a person or

group of people (Vocabulary, 2023). Moreover, the feeling of satisfaction is worthless if the
income that the employees are getting from their work cannot afford the primary monthly

expenses of an individual as well as his/her family in the modern civilization (Thorat, 2013).

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (1943), to reach an individual’s satisfaction,

people must meet the 5 standards including: physical needs – breathing, foods, water,

clothing’s, etc. safety, belongings, self-esteem, and self – actualization. In the aspect of

satisfying these needs, workers should be paid appropriately. One of the most prominent

criteria for the satisfaction of workers, is to make good income which leads to more satisfying

outcome of their contribution in workplace (Thorat, 2013).

In the City of Dasmarinas, Cavite, it is known for its famous resorts, food and beverage

stores which caters guests that visits the city. This study was conducted to have in-depth

knowledge and understanding the relationship between income and the level of satisfaction of

Hospitality Management and Hotel and Restaurant Management workers by conducting an

assessment that would align with the monthly income and satisfaction of workers.
Statement of the Problem

Salary in the hospitality industry in the Philippines is inadequate to support individual’s

needs and desires. Income, as the primary source of living conditions, affects the well-being,

such as income satisfaction, of an individual or group of people. It is important for workers to

have an income that affords their basic needs and demands and other personal fulfillment to

address their problems of livelihood.

This study aims to understand the relationship between income and level of

satisfaction of Hospitality Management and Hotel and Restaurant workers working in

hospitality industry in Dasmarinas, Cavite. Also, to assess what is really meant by “Income

Satisfaction” in terms of monthly income that they receive from their job.

1. What is the socio demographic profile of the HM and HRM workers in Hospitality

Industry in terms of:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Sex;

1.3 Educational Attainment;

1.4 Monthly Income;

1.5 Length of Employment; and

1.6 Number of working hours per week

2. What are factors that affect the financial aspect of hospitality workers in the industry in

in terms of:

2.1 Financial needs.

2.3 Skills and Knowledge

3. Which sector in hospitality industry do they work?

3.1 Food and Beverage

3.2 Lodging and Accommodation


4. What financial planning services that a company uses for its employees?

5. Is there a significant relationship between the financial performance and employee

satisfaction in hospitality industry?

Objectives of the Study

The general objective of the study is to understand the connection of salary and the

level of satisfaction of Hospitality Management and Hotel and Restaurant Management

workers working in Dasmarinas City, Cavite.

1. To determine the socio-demographic profile of Hospitality Management and Hotel and

Restaurant Management workers in Hospitality Industry in terms of age, sex,

educational attainment, monthly income, length of employment, nature of work, and

the number of working hours per week.

2. To determine level of motivational factors by the workers in Hospitality Management

and Hotel and Restaurant Management workers in terms of income satisfaction that

varies among different positions in the hospitality industry, financial needs, level of

work experience correlate with income satisfaction among employees in the hospitality

industry, and the overall jobs satisfaction of hospitality management and hotel and

restaurant management workers in relation to their monthly salary.

3. To know the monthly income of the basic salary in Dasmarinas City, Cavite.

4. To assess the level of income satisfaction in Hospitality Industry by conducting Likert

Scale: very satisfied, moderately, and dissatisfied.

5. To determine which departments do they work in hospitality industry: food &

beverage housekeeping, human resources (HR), account, and kitchen or food

production.

Figure shows the conceptual framework of the Hospitality Management and Hotel and

Restaurant workers who work in Hospitality Industry motivational factors that influences the

level of income satisfaction in their work. The input consists of four (4) factors which are the

industry financial needs, and the overall jobs satisfaction of hospitality management and hotel

and restaurant management workers in relation to their monthly salary were the dependent

variables. Moreover, the income satisfaction of hospitality management ang hotel and

restaurant management workers working in hospitality industry is the independent variable,

meaning, the study aims to understand and determine the impact of these four (4) factors and

how it influences the level of income satisfaction of hm and hrm workers in hospitality industry

in Dasmarinas City, Cavite.

Significance of the Study

The following are significant applications for the chosen study:

Hospitality Workforce. Hospitality Management and Hotel and Restaurant workers

are the subject of this research. The results of the study will understand the level of income

satisfaction in their perspective.


Hospitality Industry/Institutions. This is vital for all institutions, such as departments

because it will determine the level of satisfaction of their employees as they work on their

designated positions or tasks. Moreover, this will help the researchers to gain additional

knowledge and experience details on their study. Also, this industry is dominant in this study

wherein it can solidify the right amount of basic salary of workers.

Future Researcher. It is crucial that they need to understand the context of this study

in order to know the basic salary and how this income satisfies or affords the needs of workers.

This will raise researchers’ awareness in working in this industry.

Future Hospitality Management and Hotel and Restaurant Management workers.

This study will be an eye opener to those people who are pursuing themselves to work in this

industry. This will give them ideas on how much income that they will be getting per month as

well as assessing this income in fulfilling their personal, financial, and household needs in the

long run.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study concerns on investigating the income satisfaction of the hospitality

management and hotel and restaurant management workforce. The goal of this study is to

understand the relationship between income and the level of satisfaction of the hospitality

management and hotel and restaurant workers in this industry. The study was focused on the

motivational factors of HM and HRM workers and how this factor influences the level of income

satisfaction. The research study will be conducted in hospitality institutions, such as resorts,

hotels, food and beverage businesses, particularly in the City of Dasmarinas, Cavite. The

result of the study will be based on Likert Scale through face-to-face survey questionnaire.

The terminologies consist of the following words that shares an informative presence

in the study. It shall be then explained and provided meaning by the researchers by using the

operational value of the word.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Organized related literature and studies inform the reader what is a known and

conflicting area. The word “review” means that the research goes over the materials, books,

journals articles, theses, dissertations and internet presentations. The purpose is to determine

what has been written about the problem. The word “related” means “similar” especially on

the problem dimension.
