Assignment 3 Questions
Assignment-3
1. A wave travelling along an oblique angle θi as shown in figure below has an electric field
directed along +y direction. Identify the type of the wave. Write expressions for total electric
and magnetic fields, and derive the expression for the average power density along the
principle β + direction of travel, and directional power densities along the +x and +z
directions.
2. A linearly polarized uniform plane wave traveling in free space is incident normally upon a
flat dielectric surface as shown in Fig2.
Assume that the incident electric field is given by
Derive expressions for the equivalent volume electric and magnetic current densities, and the
regions over which they exist.

5. A uniform plane wave travelling in free space is incident, at normal incident angle, upon an
infinite PMC plate, which is parallel to the xy-plane, as shown in Fig.5.
Fig. 5 Uniform plane wave incident on PMC.
i. Write an expression, in vector form, of the incident magnetic field in terms of the incident
electric field E0 and whatever else is needed.
ii. To determine the scattered field to the left of the PMC infinite plate (negative z-direction),
formulate (do not have to derive) in vector form, the induction equivalent electric Ji or
magnetic Mi current density that must be used to determine the fields scattered to the left
(negative z-direction) of the PMC. The current density, Ji or Mi (only one of them), must be in
terms of E0 and whatever else is needed.

thickness d with ε = 4ε0 and µ = µ0 that is embedded in free space, as shown in Figure. Find
the angles θ2 and θ3 (indegrees).

8. A uniform plane wave at a frequency of 10 Hz is traveling in air, and it is incident
normally on a large body of salt water with constants of σ = 3S/m and εr = 81. If the
−3
magnitude of the electric field on the salt water side of the interface is 10 V/m, find the
depth (in meters) inside the salt water at which the magnitude of the electric field h a s b e e n

reduced to 0.368 × 10 V/m.
10. The electric field of a uniform plane wave traveling in a source-free region of free space
is given by
E = 10−3(a^x + j a^y)sin(β0 z)
(a) Is this a traveling or a standing wave? (b) Identify the traveling wave(s) of the electric
field and the direction(s) of travel. (c) Find the corresponding magnetic field. (d) Determine
the time-average power density of the wave.
11. The electric field of a time-harmonic wave traveling in free space is given by
Find the amount of real power crossing a rectangular aperture whose cross section is

perpendicular to the z axis. The area of the aperture is 20 cm .
12. The complex electric fields of a uniform plane wave is given by below expression.
