experience of redeclaring runway
distances

YOUR BRIEF
You are the Airside Operations Duty Team at Stuttgart
Airport in Germany
Your airport has a single runway (07 / 25) 3345 metres
long and 45 metres wide the declared distances are
shown in the table on the next slide

One of your regular services is flight LH 288 from
Berlin Tegel to Stuttgart
It is operated by Contact Air on behalf of Lufthansa
using a Fokker 100 aircraft

On approach to the airport, the crew
lowered the Main Landing Gear (MLG), but
received an unsafe gear indication
They abort the approach and a request is
made to ATC to hold to attempt to
troubleshoot the problem
The Captain informs ATC that there are 73
pax on board and 5 crew

A Full Emergency is declared and all fire crews standby
The External Fire service is also attendance at the airport due to the nature of the incident
As the Airside Operations Team, you also standby awaiting arrival of the aircraft

The Accident Investigation Branch
advise that you cannot move the
aircraft until they have completed an
on-site investigation
However, as a single runway
operation aerodrome, you also need to
consider redeclaring your distances,
to continue operations

YOUR TASK – PART 1
1. Redeclare all the Runway distances for both landing and take-off
directions with the aircraft remaining in its current position
2. What recommendations do you make for the different modes of
operation
You consult with your regulator and they advise that 240m RESA is
mandatory
The weather is calm, wind VRB < 2kts

YOUR TASK – PART 2
The Accident Investigation Branch have completed their preliminary
investigations on site and advise that you may now remove the
aircraft
In order to achieve this, you are informed by the Recovery Team that
they need to bring in a crane to lift the aircraft
The crane is expected to operate to a maximum height of 30 metres
