OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:


a. Identify the Different Ethnic Dances
b. Appreciate the Importance of Ethnic dance in the
Philippines
c. the Student will perform the Basic Steps of Specific
Ethnic dance.
ETHNIC
DANCES
ETHNIC DANCE
It is indigenous to a certain race or
country. the term ethnic used to
distinguish religious dances, and
designed as hymns of praise to god
or bring good fortune in peace and
war.
WHAT ARE THE
DIFFERENT TYPES
OF ETHNIC DANCES?
RITUAL DANCE
Rituals sustain the spiritual and social life of the
indigenous Filipinos. Closely attuned to nature,
believing in the spirits that keep their
environment fruitful and their selves alive.
LIFE CYCLE DANCE
are dances which celebrate an
individual’s baptism, courtship,
wedding, demise. the life of the
young is devoutly and joyfully
ushered in nurtured and
promoted.
OCCUPATIONAL
DANCES
Life in the ethnic communities is characterized by a
variety of activities relating to livelihood or
defense. These activities are joyfully celebrated in
mime and dance. Most common to the varied
ethnic cultures of the Philippines is the
transformation of the rice cycle into dance.

DUGSO
The dugso shows the Higaonon
performing the ritual of hinaklaran where
in the men and women hold hands while
moving around in a measured steps
named after peculiar body movement.

thanks giving.
PAGDIDIWATA
The Pagdidiwata is dance originating
from the tagbanua tribe of palawan.
which is a thanksgiving ritual and is
linked with harvest time and full moon.
SALIP
A courtship dance centered on the use
of Kain, a hand woven kalinga cloth
used as clothing or blanket,. to the
accompaniment of crowd singing if
Elay, the man thrust initiating the
movements roosters while the women
simulates the movement of a hen.
MANANAGAT
Is occupational dance which
originated from bogo, Cebu. this
dance imitates the work of a
fisherman and his companion. they
dance to the tune of the moderate
and lively music.
MANGMANGAYAW
Is an Ethnic dance performed
by men as they hunt and fight
their enemies.
INAGONG
This dance often performed by
tribes during the gathering and
intended to entertain guests
and tribe members.
TALUPAK
Is a dance which displays the
usual life in the province of
Bukidnon showing how planting
and harvesting or fishing in the
river are done.
MANDADAWAK
The Kalingas, another mountain tribe of Northern Philippines has a ritual dance
called idaw. A ritual leader called the “mandadawak” facilitated the idaw. In idaw,
a group of warrior watches over the number of insects entering a plate; the
number of which will determine the number of heads to be taken in during a
headhunting expedition. The Kalingas also have a celebratory dance called a
takiling, which is performed after a successful headhunting expedition. The
crowned heroes of such missions were called “Mingaos.”
RAGRAGSAKAN
This is classified under Mountain-Igorot Dances. It is an
adaptation of a tradition in which Kalinga women gather and
prepare for a budong, or peace pact. The Kalingga borrowed
the beautiful word ragragsakan from the Ilocano, which means
"merriment." The two biggest occassions for a ragragsakan in a
Kalinga village are for the homecoming of successful head
takers and the culmination of peace-pact between warring
tribes. In this dance, Kalinga maidens balance labba baskets on
thier heads, wave colorful tribal blankets, and sing short
salidumay songs as they snake through the terrace dikes and
skip through breaks in the path.
BILAAN “B’LAAN”
Courtship dance of the Bilaan of Davao
del Sur imitating birds during mating
season. The females scurry to safety,
burying their heads under their wings
(the malong), but the aggressive males
follow them wherever they go.
UYAUY/UYAOY
An Ifugao wedding festival dance
accompanied by gongs and is
performed by the affluent to attain
the second level of the wealthy class.
Wealthy people who have performed
this dance are entitled to the use of
gongs at their death.
AETA IN ZAMBALES
The Aeta of Zambales stage the anituan
to drive away the evil spirits that causes
sickness. the patients are surrounded by
the shaman and the patient’s relatives.
they threaten the spirits to go away with
their bows and arrows, spears and sticks
