In 1895, William G. Morgan invented a new game called "Mintonette". However, Alfred Halstead noticed the
volleying action used to get the ball over the net, so he decided to change the name to "volleyball".
Morgan wanted to create a skilled activity, which required more players, less space, and less exertion than
basketball. The first net was a “rope” and the first ball was a basketball air bladder. Until 1960, men and women
played with different rules. Now the rules are the same except for the height of the net, the men’s net is higher.
A player cannot hit the ball twice. A points gained when a team plays the ball in the opposition's court and the ball
is not defended, therefore it lands within the court. The ball must be served (hit) from outside the court, otherwise it
will be regarded as a foul.
A player usually wears knee pads to protect their knees from becoming bruised during dives for the volleyball. In
order to win the game, the winners must be ahead by 2 points or the game goes on until you win by 2 points.
Some specific techniques are more common in digging than in passing. A player may sometimes perform a
"dive". When the player also slides his or her hand under a ball that is almost touching the court, this is called a
"pancake". The pancake is frequently used in indoor volleyball. Besides being one of the best-known sports in the
world, and being a favorite to millions of people, it is in the Olympics.

The most obvious function of clothing is to improve the comfort of the wearer, by protecting the wearer from the
elements. In hot climates, clothing provides protection from sunburn or wind damage, while in cold climates its
thermal insulation properties are generally more important.
Clothing performs a range of social and cultural functions, such as individual, occupational and gender differentiation,
and social status. In many societies, norms about clothing reflect standards of modesty, religion, gender, and social
status.
Clothing can and has in history been made from a very wide variety of materials. Materials have ranged from leather
and furs to woven materials, to elaborate and exotic natural and synthetic fabrics. Clothes protect people from the

Liverpool city council want to clear the city of fat pigeons. They say that people are feeding the birds, which makes
them fat. The pigeons get bigger because their normal diet would consist of seeds and insects, not high-fat junk
food they are eating in the city center.
The council want people to know that everyone who feeds the pigeons is responsible for the streets being so crowded
with these birds. They hope to encourage the birds to move away from the city center and into parks and open spaces.
Ten robotic birds have been brought into the city center to scare the pigeons away and visitors are asked not to give
the pigeons any food. The mechanical birds - known as 'robots' - will sit on the roofs of buildings. They can be moved
around to different locations. They look like a peregrine falcon, which is a bird that kills pigeons. They even make

Walt Disney was born on 5 December 1901, in Chicago. His parents were of German/English and Irish descent. As a
child, the Disney family moved between Marceline in Missouri, Kansas City and back to Chicago. The young Walt
Disney developed an interest in art and took lessons at the Kansas City Institute and later Chicago Art Institute. He
became the cartoonist for the school magazine.
When America joined the First World War, Walt dropped out of school and tried to enlist in the army. He was rejected
for being underage, but he was later able to join in the Red Cross and in late 1918 was sent to France to drive an
ambulance.
In 1919, he moved back to Kansas City where he got a series of jobs, before finding employment in his area of
greatest interest – the film industry. It was working for the Kansas City Film Ad company that he gained the
opportunity to begin working in the relatively new field of animation. Walt used his talent as a cartoonist to start his
first work.
The success of his early cartoons enabled him to set up his own studio called Laugh-O-Gram. However, the popularity
of his cartoons was not matched by his ability to run a profitable business. With high labor costs, the firm went
bankrupt. After his first failure, he decided to move to Hollywood, California which was home to the growing film
industry in America. This ability to overcome adversity was a standard feature of Disney’s career.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. While spending most of his early years at sea, Columbus
began to believe that he could find a shortcut to the Indies by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately,
the King of Portugal refused to finance such a trip, and Columbus was forced to present his idea to the King and
Queen of Spain. In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to pay for his trip. They gave him a crew and
three ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. Columbus sailed aboard the Santa Maria.
The trip was long and hard. Many sailors grew restless and wanted to turn around. After two months at sea, land was
finally sighted. The ships docked on the island of Hispaniola. Columbus named the native people he saw "Indians",
because he believed he had found the shortcut he was looking for. In actuality, Columbus found North America, a
brand new continent at that time. Columbus, however, couldn't be convinced. He died with the belief he had found the

The Great Pyramid at Giza is one of the world's most amazing landmarks. Rising high above the Sahara Desert in the
Giza region of northern Egypt, the Great Pyramid stands some 450 feet into the burning desert sky and occupies an
area of 13 acres. The rough climate of the Sahara has actually caused the pyramid to shrink 30 feet from its original
height. The pyramid was such an amazing feat of engineering that it remained the tallest structure in the world for
over 3800 years! The entire pyramid was originally faced with polished limestone to make it shine brilliantly in the
sun.
Most Egyptologists, scientists who study ancient Egypt, agree that the Great Pyramid was built around 2560 BC, a
little more than 4,500 years ago. It took tens of thousands of workers twenty years to build. The pyramid contains over
two million stone blocks. Although most of the blocks weigh two or three tons, some weigh up to 80 tons!
The Great Pyramid of Giza was ordered built by the Pharaoh Khufu as a magnificent tomb. His advisor, Hemon, is
credited with being the pyramid's architect. Khufu's pyramid is actually part of a complex of pyramids that includes

People today are always thinking about the time. There never seems to be enough time to do all the things we want to
do. Believe it or not, there was a time before time was so important. It was enough to know that the sun was out. That
meant it was daytime. During these days when the clock seems to control us, doesn’t that sound kind of nice?
Time can mean a lot of different things. That’s one way we know how important it is for us. We have so many words
about it! The smallest amount of time we can measure is called a second. When you put 60 seconds together, you get
one minute. If you take 60 minutes, you get one hour. The hands of the clock go all the way around twice in 24 hours,
giving us one day.
If you want to look at time beyond one day, you leave the clock and look at a calendar instead. There are about 30
days in one month. Some months have an extra day; February has a couple less. There are 12 months in one year.
Time never stops.

Microscopes are tools that scientists use to make observations. When scientists make observations, they record their
data. They will then share it with other scientists.
Even student scientists, like you, can use a microscope. With a microscope, you can see things that are too tiny to see
with your eyes. Microscopes magnify things. They make them look bigger than they really are. Many things in science
can be studied under a microscope.
Light microscopes have been used for a long time. Many different inventors worked on making the microscope.
Robert Hooke and Anton Van Leeuwenhoek were two of its early inventors in the 1500s. Today’s light microscopes
work better than early ones. Some can magnify things 1,000 times! A light microscope uses two glass lenses. The
lenses are inside a short tube. A light bulb shines under the object you are looking at. It helps you see the object
clearly. Little knobs like wheels can be turned to make the view sharp and clear.

triangles, though. You may have noticed that they can be shaped slightly differently. They can have different-sized
angles. They can have sides that are different lengths. There are three kinds of triangles. Triangles can be equilateral,
isosceles, or scalene.
An equilateral triangle has three equal sides. It also has three equal angles. The three angles of an equilateral triangle
are each 60º. They add up to 180º.The second kind of triangle is an isosceles triangle. An isosceles triangle has two
sides that are equal, and one that is different. It also has two angles that have the same measurement. The third angle is
different. The three angles add up to 180º.
The last kind of triangle is a scalene triangle. A scalene triangle has three sides that are different lengths, and three
angles that have different measurements. However, the three angles still add up to 180º.Triangles get a second name
based on the kind of angles they have inside. Sometimes, all the angles are small. If they are all less than 90º, the
triangle is called an acute triangle. If it has one right angle (exactly 90º), it is called a right triangle. If it has an angle
that is more than 90º, it is called an obtuse triangle. The names can be used together to describe triangles very
precisely.
For example, you can have a right isosceles triangle. It would have two equal sides, a 90º angle and two 45º angles.

For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were chimpanzees. Now, however, there is proof
that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes. Although a dolphin lives in the sea it is not a fish. It is a
mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a human being.
Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn how to
talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make. If man
wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both he and the dolphins can
understand.
Dolphins are also very friendly towards man. They often follow ships. There are many stories of dolphins guiding

Bison have not always lived in North America, they are relative newcomers. They belong to the Bovidae family,
like domestic castle and wild buffalo of Africa and Asia. The oldest known bison fossils have been found in China and
Himalayan foothills, where an animal with all the essential features of the genus lived a million years ago. They
evolved rapidly and spread over most of the northern hemisphere in Europe and Siberia.
During one of the Ice Ages, the faunas of Asia and North America began to intermingle. Very early, the steppe
bison moved eastward to the North American continent. Much later, men followed the same route.

Endal the wonder dog, already named Dog of the Millennium and Brightest dog on Earth, made national news

366. Read and choose the correct answer. “Life in Tudor Times.”
The six powerful Tudor kings and queens ruled England from 1485- 1603. The most famous king was Henry VIII,
who married six times and beheaded two of wives. It was one of the most exciting times in Britain history but whether
you rich or poor, life could be very difficult.
Rich Tudors lived in fine houses with many rooms and big windows. Poor country people lived in small wooden
houses with mud floors. In the towns, the streets were narrow, gloomy and crowded, which made it easy for criminals
to steal from shops and people. Wealthy people and noblemen owned land or even helped The King or Queen to rule
the country. Most people, however, were poor and worked in the countryside. Slightly rich people worked as
craftsmen and merchants in the towns. Tudor shops had picture signs outside to show people what they sold, as many
people could not read.
In Tudor times rich people often held huge banquets where they ate far too much. They had quite an unhealthy diet as
they ate lots of very salty meat from the animals they owned or hunted. They also ate very little fruit, vegetable, milk,
butter and eggs as they thought these foods were only suitable for poor people to eat.
It was the law that every man had to practice archery every Sunday morning! Rich people liked to fence and play
tennis while ordinary people played games like bowls, hockey and football or went to the theatre. William
Shakespeare lived in Tudor times. His plays are still performed all over the world.

“World language”
Today, millions of people want to learn to improve their English but it is difficult to find the best method. Is it better
to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country?
The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time you
are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another advantage is that
you have to speak the language if you are with other people. In Italy, it is always possible, in the class, to speak Italian
if you want to and the learning is slower.
On the other hand, there are also advantages to staying at home to study. You don’t have to make big changes to your
life. As well as this, it is also a lot of cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to achieve the results of
living in the UK. If you have a good teacher in Italy, I think you can learn in a more concentrated way than being in
Britain without going to a school.
So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend some time in
the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Italy is the only viable option. The most
important thing to do in this situation is to maximize your opportunities: to speak only English in class and to try to
use English whenever possible outside the class.

Fed up sitting in traffic in the morning rush hour? Well, for London’s tired workers this may no longer be a problem.
In a few years, “ flying taxis” or “ jet pods” may be a common sight in the skies of London. Commuters can park their

probably cost about £15 one way for each passenger. It is quiet and environmentally friendly and will take about
37,000 cars off the road.

Raisins are dried grapes that have been eaten for thousands of years. Nearly 3,500 years ago, the first raisins were
discovered as grapes that were drying in the sun on a vine. In medieval Europe, raisins were used as sweeteners,
medicine, and even as a form of money!
In America, raisins were first grown after an 1873 heat wave in California destroyed its valuable grape crop, leaving
only dried, wrinkly, but tasty grapes on the vines. Soon, farmers began developing seedless grapes in California that
thin skinned and sweet. These grapes would be purposely dried in the sun and became the popular dark raisin we eat
and enjoy today. Later, a golden variety of raisin was made by treating grapes with a chemical called sulfur dioxide
and using special methods to dry them.

Hi, I am Ganaa. In summer, I work at a theme park in a nearby coastal town for a month. I love summer time
and working at the park so I can't wait till the schools close for the summer. The amusement park where I
work is really big with lots of fun rides and restaurants. But what's the best about it is that it is actually built
on the beach. This is a beach town and there is a really long boardwalk by the beach with many shops, food
stores and stairs to the beach at several points. The main entrance to the park is also from the boardwalk. The
park also has access to the beach so you can get to the beach by going through the park.
I work there as a ride operator at one of the roller coasters which is the most fun. There are three other
employees who work at the same ride with me. We welcome the riders, remind them the safety procedures
and operate the ride. I work here for about two months every summer and enjoy it very much. They organize
several fun events over the summer with free food, ice-cream and games for the workers. The park access is
free for the employees so I can ride the rides as much as I want. My family and friends love visiting me here
because I can get them free admission to the park too. The only bad part about working here is that it gets too
hot sometimes. But even then, I can just jump in the cool waters of the Atlantic ocean and refresh.

How we eat
1. Everybody knows that the traditional Mediterranean diet is supposed to be very healthy. A typical meal
consists of a salad, fresh vegetables and some meat or fish which is cooked in olive oil. Bread and fresh fruit
are served with most meals.
2. Unfortunately, many people are abandoning healthy eating habits and living on pizzas and hamburgers.
You can find fast food restaurants everywhere now and they are usually full of young people. Another new
habit is eating in the street. Wherever you go and no matter what time of day it is, you can see people eating
snacks in the street.
3. Why are eating habits changing? First, a lot of people live alone or don’t have time to go home at
lunchtime. A snack is easy and quick. In the past, mothers stayed at home and cooked full meals for their
families. Now they go to work, too. Also, it is trendy to go to fast food places. Many young people go there to
be like their friends. But I’m not sure they all like the food!
4. In my opinion, if we carry on eating so much fast food we are going to become very unhealthy. So I think
that people should go back to eating our traditional dishes which are varied and good for them. Schools should
set an example and serve healthy meals at lunchtime. And there should be cooking lessons in school!

An honesty fun camp
Will couldn’t wait for September when school would start. It was early August, and he was at the same
summer camp he had been going to for the last five years. His dad went to the camp when he was a boy and
loved it, so Will didn’t want to disappoint his dad by telling him that he didn’t even like it. By the middle of
August, Will had had more than enough. He had had enough of the horses, enough of the baseball games,
enough of the canoeing and enough of the lousy camp food.
He wrote to his mom and asked her if she would pick him up early, but he didn’t want his mom to tell his dad.
She responded in a letter which said, “I can’t do that. I am always honest with my dad. If you really want to
leave, I will talk to him about it.”
Will was still too worried about disappointing his dad, so he wrote back to his mom that he would stay for the
last two weeks and try to make the best of it. He asked his mom if she would make his favorite meal when he
got home.
During that last week, Will was looking so forward to the meal his mom would be making that every time he
ate a camp meal he imagined he was eating his mom’s cooking. All of sudden, the food didn’t taste as bad.
Will decided to be honest with his camp counselors. He told the head horseback counselor that he wasn’t
comfortable with the horse he had been assigned. The counselor asked Will which horse he might feel better
riding. Will was then assigned to Misty for the last week, and he started to like horseback riding. Will never
liked playing baseball because he didn’t like playing first base. He told the baseball counselor, and the
counselor switched him to play catcher. Will started actually like baseball.
As for canoeing, Will always ended up sitting in the bow of the canoe. He told his counselor that he would
like to try sitting in the stern. Once he was able to take on the role of the stern paddler, he started to enjoy
canoeing because he liked steering the canoe.
When Will’s parents came to pick him up from camp, he said to them in all honesty.
“ This was the best summer at camp ever.” He said to them that he couldn’t wait for next year’s camp, and he
might even want to stay for an extra two weeks.

Only two parts of the USA are mild or warm in winter — a) the coasts, especially Florida and southern
California, and b) the southern part of the Mississippi basin.
Everywhere else it gets cold, often very cold. By the end of November, many American states are often
covered in snow; and although recent winters have been less cold, sport in winter usually means snow sports,
or indoor sports.
By January, many people in North America will have temperatures of -30°C; not every day, of course, but
such low temperatures are not rare. In Chicago course, but such low temperatures are not rare. In Chicago and
Minneapolis, the temperature can fall below -40 0.
When it is very cold, especially when there is a cold wind, few people want to go outside, unless they have to;
but on sunny winter days, winter sports are popular.
In the large flat regions in the middle of North America, the most popular winter sports are snowmobiling,
snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. Ice-skating is popular too; lakes and rivers freeze, and many towns
and cities have free open-air skating rinks. In many places, these are flood-lit after dark, so that people can
enjoy skating in the evening.
However, for many people, real "winter sports" means downhill skiing; and in the USA, there are two
principal areas for this; the Adirondack Mountains in the North East, and the Rockies in the west.
How is the weather in the southern California?

639.2. How is the weather in other parts of America except the two parts?

639.3. What sports are the most popular on winter days?

639.4. When do people enjoy skating?

639.5. What parts are the principal places for downhill skiing?

Europeans play football, and Americans play football; but surprisingly they do not play the same game.
American football is played by men wearing helmets and protective clothing; the ball is oval. European
football is played with a round ball, by people wearing just socks, shorts, a shirt, and football boots.
Americans have another popular outdoor game too; baseball - a classic American game, that is only played
seriously in North America. In Britain, a few people play an "ancestor" of baseball, called "rounders" - but it
is not a popular sport.
In today's "global village", lifestyles have become international.
Besides these big sports, America of course has basketball - perhaps the most successful "export" invented at
Springfield College, Massachusetts, in 1891. Basketball is quite certainly an "American game". Basketball has
become much more popular in other countries than any other American team sport.
Until the 1960's, team sports were not played on a global scale. In Europe, people played European games,
and in North America American games were played. The only real "global" sports were individual sports,
such as golf and tennis.
1, What do Americans and Europeans play?

640.2. What is the classic American game?

640.3. Where is the baseball played?

640.4. Where was basketball invented?

Coca-Cola is now a permanent part of world culture. People know and drink Coca-Cola all over the world.
It is said that the Coca-Cola bottle is the most recognized object in the world. And the famous Coca-Cola logo
is the most famous logo in the world. Unlike any other famous commercial logo, it has not changed in 100
years!
But the story of Coca-Cola is even older than that. It was in 1886 that John Pemberton, a druggist in Atlanta,
Georgia, invented a new type of syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few other secret
ingredients! Pemberton sold it as a medicine; and with its coca, it must have made people feel good!
Candler was the man who really invented the drink Coca-Cola. At first he sold it in his drugstore; then he
began selling the syrup to other drugstores, who used it with their soda fountains. Candler also advertised his
new drink, and soon people were going to drugstores just to get a drink of Coca-Cola.
Before long, other people became interested in the product, including a couple of businessmen who wanted to
sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a license to bottle the drink. The famous bottle, with its very distinctive
shape, was designed in 1916.
Today, Coca-Cola is made in countries all over the world. It is the world's most popular drink.
What does John Pemberton do?

641.2. What did John Pemberton use for his invention’?

641.3. Who was the real inventor of Coca-Cola?

641.4. Who did Candler sell a license?

641.5. When was the famous bottle designed?

Artists use color to create patterns. Color can also show different moods. Bright colors make us feel happy
and energetic. Dark colors make us feel calm or sad.
The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. They are the colors that can be mixed together to make different
colors. Mixing two primary colors makes a secondary color. The secondary colors are orange, green, and
violet (purple). Orange is made by mixing yellow and red. Green is made by mixing yellow and blue. Violet is
made by mixing red and blue.
Intermediate colors can be made by mixing a primary and a secondary color together. Some intermediate
colors are blue violet and red orange. Black, white, and gray are special colors. They are called neutral colors.
Colors have been organized into a color wheel. It shows the three primary colors, the three secondary colors,
and the six intermediate colors. Artists use the color wheel. It helps them know which colors they want to use
together.
What kinds of colors make us feel calm?

642.2. What kinds of colors make us feel like we have lots of energy?

642.3. What are the primary colors?

642.4. What are the secondary colors?

642.5. What tool do artists use to organize all the colors?

We can watch things around us move. When something is in motion, it changes its position. Objects can move
from one place to another. They can move in many directions. If you roll a ball, it might move in a straight
line. It might also move in a curve. A swing can move back and forth. A light switch can move up and down.
Fans have blades that move in a circle. If you want to know if something is moving, you can compare it to
other things around it that are not moving. If the things behind the object are changing, the object is probably
moving. If they are not changing, the object is probably not moving.
You can measure the distance an object moves.
Just measure the distance between where it was when it started to move and where it was when it stopped.
Distance can be measured in inches, feet, yards or miles. Those measurements are in the customary system. It
can also be measured in millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers. Those measurements are in the
metric system.
When something is in motion, what does it change?
643.2. How does a swing move?

643.3. How does a light switch move?

643.4. How can you test if something is moving or not?

643.5. What is one unit of measurement you could use to measure distance?

You can cut a whole thing into equal parts. This lets everyone have a fair share. Each of the parts is called a
fraction. Fractions have special names. The names tell us how many pieces of that size would be needed to
make a whole.
Someone is cutting a pie. He/she is being careful to make equal parts. When he/she is done, he/she will have
eight slices that are all the same size. Each slice is called one-eighth.
A single slice is one of the eight pieces needed to make the whole pie. Because none of the pieces are gone
yet, it is still a whole. No matter how many pieces the pie is cut into, if you have all the pieces, it is still a
whole.
The more pieces that are cut, the smaller the pieces have to be. If the pie is cut into only three pieces, the
pieces will be pretty big. Each of the pieces will be called one-third. If the pie is cut into five pieces, the pieces
have to be a little smaller. You have to get two more slices out of the pie. Each piece is called one-fifth. Other
names are one-fourth for four parts, one-half for two parts and one-sixth for six parts.
What is a fraction?

644.2. How does a fraction get its special name?

644.3. What do you have if you have all the pieces that the whole was cut into?

644.4. How do you call each piece when the pie is cut into three pieces? ?

644.5. If the whole is cut into four pieces, what is the special name for each of the pieces?

The Cherokee were a dominant tribe that lived in parts of modern-day Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas,
Alabama and Kentucky. Men and women had specific gender roles: Men were in charge of war, hunting, and
diplomatic relations, while females were in charge of the home, property, and family. Sometimes, Cherokee
women participated in war too. The Cherokee were divided into seven large clans: Long Hair, Paint, Bird,
Wolf, Wild Potato, Deer, and Blue. Babies would be born into their mother's clan. Villages were comprised of
individuals from different clans. A man and a woman from the same clan could not marry.
The Cherokee had many sacred ceremonies including those for their crops, births, deaths, war, moon phases,
and other events. The most important Cherokee ceremony was the Green Corn Ceremony, which took place
when the last corn crop ripened. The ceremony usually lasted four days and honored, Selu, the Cherokee Corn
Mother. At the beginning of the ceremony, all of the members of a village would wash themselves in a source
of moving water. Then, sacred dances representing the harvest would be performed for several hours within
the sacred circle, a large pit that also included a fire lit with a sacred branch that was struck by lightning. The
ceremony would end with various other dances and rituals including one in which the entire village danced
around the sacred fire.

Galileo Galilei was born in the year 1564 in the town of Pisa, Italy. When he was 20 years old, he was
studying in Pisa. His father wanted him to be a doctor, but Galileo was bored with school except for math.
Because math was the one subject where he was doing well, the court mathematician offered to tutor him
privately so he could become a qualified mathematician. Galileo’s father was disappointed, but he agreed.
Because he needed to earn money, Galileo began experimenting with different things, trying to come up with
some sort of invention that he could sell for money. He had a little bit of success with his invention that was
like a compass that could be used to measure plots of land. He had already experimented with pendulums,
thermometers, and magnets.
When he heard that a Dutch inventor had invented something called a spyglass, but was keeping it a secret,
Galileo decided to work on one of his own. Within 24 hours, he had invented a telescope that could magnify
things to make them appear ten times larger than real life.
One night, he pointed his telescope toward the sky, and made his first of many space observations: the moon
was not smooth, like everyone thought. The moon was covered in bumps and craters. As technology has
improved, first Galileo, and then many others, have made improvements on the telescope, the wonderful
device that allows us to see from a distance.
Where was Galileo Galilei studying when he was 20?

646.2. Why did Galileo Galilei use to like math?

Geometry is the study of two-dimensional shapes, three-dimensional figures and all the various positions,
combinations, sizes and shapes they can have. Geometry deals with a sense of space. It requires people to
reason and problem-solve. Geometry is found in everyday life, especially in art, science, architecture, sports
and more. Ancient Greek named Euclid is known as the Father of Geometry. Much of the geometry studied by
students is based on his ideas. His ideas are very important for further geometrical studies in high school and
college.
There are many important mathematical terms to know to be successful in geometry. A ray is part of a line. It
has only one endpoint, and it extends forever in one direction. A line is a straight path of points that continues
on forever in two directions.
Lines are called different things depending on their position in relationship to other lines. Two lines are
parallel to each other when they stay the same distance apart and never cross. Two lines are perpendicular to
each other when they cross to form four right angles. Two lines are intersecting lines when one line crosses
the other, and they share a point.
Who is called the Father of Geometry?

647.3. What is the main difference between a ray and a line?

647.4. How do you know if two lines are parallel to each other?

My working day starts very early. From Monday to Friday I get at half past three and I have a shower and a
cup of coffee. I usually leave the house at ten past four because the car always arrives a few minutes early. I
get to the studio at about five o’clock and start work. My program” Good Morning Britain” starts at seven
o’clock and finishes at nine o’clock.
Then I leave the studio at a quarter past ten. After that, I go shopping and visit some friends. I get home at

Tea is made from the leaves of the tea plant. At first, it was used as a medicine, but it became an everyday
drink in the third century AD.
First, the leaves are picked from the plant and they are spread into a cloth. They are left there for up to twenty
hours. Next, the leaves are rolled up until they are dried. The tea is packed into containers and sent to different
countries. It is sold to customers as loose leaves, as tea bags and as instant tea.
To make tea, we boil water and pour it over the dry tea in a teapot. This is left for three to five minutes. We
can then add milk, lemon or sugar. In Britain, it was the custom to serve tea in the afternoons with sandwiches
and cakes. This custom was started by the Duchess of Bedford around 1840. Today, people drink tea all over

Dear Leo,
I’m writing to tell about my new house. It’s the biggest house I’ve ever lived in, but also the most expensive.
Still, it’s much nicer than my last house.
Although the garden is a little smaller, the rooms are much more spacious and there is much less noise. The
area I live in now the most peaceful place I’ve ever lived in. The neighbors are quieter here than anywhere
else, and they are the most friendly people you will ever meet.
There are lots of flowers here, so it’s much more colorful than my previous home, and there is a bus stop near
my house, so it’s more convenient than before because I don’t have to take my car to work. All in all, I can

flu sometime during the school years. When you have the flu, you usually get a fever (which can be high),
have a cough, feel very tired, and may have a sore throat as well. It can make you feel sick for a few days or
for as long as a week. Sometimes, it can be hard to tell if you have the flu or a cold, but with the flu, you’ll

only help the symptoms such as the cough and fever. For most kids, the flu comes and goes, but for some, it
can be a serious illness.
Most kids get the flu in the winter because germs spread more easily when kids are inside in settings such as

Every year students in many countries learn English. Some of these students are young people, others are
teenagers. Many are adults. Some learn at school, others study by themselves. A few learn English just by
hearing the language in the film on television, in the office or among their friends. But not many are lucky
enough to do that. Most people must work hard to learn another language. Many boys and girls learn English
at school because it is one of their subjects. They study their own language, mathematics and English.
In England, or America, or Australia, many boys and girls study their own language , which is English, and
mathematics and another language, perhaps French, or German or Spanish. Many adults learn English,
because it is useful for their work. Teenagers often learn English for their higher studies because some of want

Superman and Batman are the most famous superheroes. We could also include Spiderman, Wonder Woman,
Robin Hood, James Bond, Zorro, Indiana Jones and a lot more. They're all more or less the same person, in
different forms. Some are in the past, others in the present and others in the future.
But why does Hollywood love superheroes? Is it a question of money? Of course; but it's not only money.
People have always loved superheroes.Long before the first Hollywood movie, people loved stories about
superheroes. Robin Hood has been a popular hero for over 600 years ... and there were others before him.
The first superheroes were real people. Nevertheless, the stories about them were often invented. Some of the
oldest European superheroes were Charlemagne and Roland (Orlando). Mediaeval writers and singers
invented exciting stories about these real men, just as Hollywood invents stories about tomorrow's
superheroes.
A thousand years ago, people sometimes sat round in dark rooms in the evening, listening to the adventures of
brave heroes. Today, we sit in a dark room in the evening, watching the adventures of the brave Batman. The
medium is different, the technology has been changed but the people are really the same.

Misheel was visiting Aunt Zulaa at her house at the beach. It was a beautiful summer day. Misheel had built a
giant sand castle that morning. Her aunt took pictures of the castle to send to Misheel’s parents. It was a great
big sand castle. Later that morning, Misheel and her aunt went swimming in the ocean. It was fun to jump
with the waves. Then, they went in the house and ate sandwiches and strawberries for lunch.
Misheel wanted to play on the beach that afternoon. Her Aunt told her it was too hot to go outside without a
hat on. Misheel didn’t have a hat. Her Aunt told her not to worry, she could wear one of hers. she tried on four
hats. The pink one was really pretty, but it had a big bow in the back that was too long for Misheel. The green
hat was too fancy for her. She did not like that hat at all. The blue hat was nice, but it had an ugly bird on it.
Then, she saw a big brown hat with a yellow ribbon on it. That hat was made of straw. It was a perfect hat for

My name is Bolor and this is what I normally do. I love to walk on the mountain. During the week I wake up
early and go for a small walk on the mountain. I usually go with my father or my brother. We like to get some
fresh air before we start our day. We live in the country far away from the city. We think that our country life
is wonderful because we are away from the noise and pollution of the city. We often walk for about one-half
hour and then return to our home. I always take my bus after our walk and at about 8:30 a.m. and arrive at
school at 9:00 a.m. My father takes his car and goes to town to work. He works at a veterinary clinic. He is a
vet and loves to help animals. We have 3 dogs and two cats. On the week end we wake up early and go for a
hike on the mountain. It is so nice to smell the fresh air and see the wild animals. We stay there for about three

year. We watch it out the window and hope we have a snow day from school the next day. Mom makes hot
chocolate for us and we bake cookies. It is always something special when we have the first snow. Mom likes
to make vegetable soup for us to eat. She says it helps to keep us warm when we play in the snow. Ochir and I

snow angels. Then, we slid down the hill on boxes with our neighbors. Finally, we spent the whole afternoon

to cultivate their own trees. They made a drink from cacao beans and exchanged the beans for other goods.
They also used cacao beans for religious ceremonies.
Mayan merchants traveled north and introduced cacao beans to the Aztec people. Soon the cacao bean was
part of the Aztecs´ lives. They used it as a drink, as part of religious ceremonies and even as money. With 10
beans, you could buy a rabbit. With 100 beans, you could buy a slave. One of the Aztec god.
