2. THE PROGRAMME
2.1 Name of Programme
The name of the programme is Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Civil Engineering. It aims at
producing graduates with sound knowledge in Civil Engineering

2.2 History of the Programme

The Department of Civil Engineering started in July 25, 2012 (2011/2012 academic session) with
a vision to become one of the best in the nation in the near future. The philosophy of the
Department is to train engineers that are capable fulfilling the definition of Civil Engineering as “a
vital art working with great source of power in nature for the wealth and the well-being of the
whole society. The essential feature of which is the exercise of imagination to engineer products
and processes, and develop the people needed to create and maintain a sustainable natural and
built environment and requiring a broad understanding of scientific principles, knowledge of
materials, and the art of analysis and synthesis. It also requires research, team working leadership
and business skills...”
With this mind-set in view, the Department aims to train engineers that would be capable of
analysing, designing, constructing and maintaining physical facilities for the development of the
environment; and also strive through the training received, to achieve the national goals and
objectives of industrialization towards self–reliance engineering education. This is to be achieved
in accordance to the NUC Minimum academic standard. The Departmental guidelines are geared
towards:
 The development of a scheme in training and practice of civil engineering
 Early broad-based training in general engineering and technology
 Practical application of engineering, technology and manufacturing processes and
 Close relation of the programme with industries in the country

The programme is structured in such a way that students will have opportunity to take courses that
would provide a basic understanding of all areas of civil engineering practice, while they can
concentrate in any of the following options in the final year.
a. Structural engineering
b. Geotechnical engineering
c. Transportation planning and highway engineering
d. Water resources and environmental engineering

2.3 Programme Objectives:

The objectives of the Department of Civil Engineering are in consonant with the motto of the
University. Consequently, the Department strives to generate and provide high quality and high-
tech knowledge in a student-friendly environment for the purpose of producing well-prepared

6.4 Industrial Training:

The industrial training aspect of the programme is divided into two namely the Students Work
Experience Programme (SWEP) and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
The the Students’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP) is held at the end of the 200-Level and
300 level just during the end of session break. It is carried out on the Departmental and Faculty
Laboratory and Workshop. The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is held during the
whole second Semester at the 400 level. This is to expose the students to real life situations in
engineering or related establishment within and outside the country.

7.0 EXAMINATIONS
This involves examination setting, conduct, evaluation scheme, moderation schemes – internal and
external for degree examination and the issuance of results.

7.1 Setting of Examinations

Each lecturer sets examination for the course he/she teaches and such questions are vetted by the
Head of Department, who has the responsibility of moderating the questions with the cooperation
of the lecturer. For final year examinations, the set questions are sent to the University appointed
14
external examiner to moderation. The external examiner is expected to write and submit a report to
the Vice-Chancellor regarding his observations during the moderation exercise. The Department is
then obliged to accept the modifications to the questions by the external examiner. This applies
only to semester examinations and not test or mid-semester examination. Also, the external
examiner is called upon to assess the final year students projects.

7.2 Moderations of Examinations

The lecturer(s) of each course is/are responsible for drawing questions, according to the stipulated
departmental format, in the course taught. All examination papers and marking schemes are
subjected to internal moderation. The answer scripts are likewise subjected to internal moderation.

7.3 Conduct of Examinations

All semester examinations are conducted by the University, including the selection and distribution
of invigilators and examination venues under the supervision of a University appointed Chairman
of Examination Committee whose members are selected by the University.

7.4 Evaluation of Scheme

After a lecturer has graded the scripts he/she submits them to the HOD. The HOD then ensures that
the scripts are vetted by himself or any other senior colleagues in the department who must be
senior to the examiner of the course. This applies to all courses at all levels including the final year.
The examiner ensures that the marking scheme and model answers are forwarded to the HOD as
soon as the question papers are submitted. Once the grading process is completed, a meeting of the
Departmental Board of Examiners with the Head of Department as chairman is convened. The
board will discuss the results, ensuring that probity, integrity and rule of competence have been
observed in grading the scripts. Consensus is the rule and where this is not possible, the matter is
passed on to the Faculty Board of Examiners

7.5 Faculty Board of Examiners

The Faculty Board of Examiners is the forum in which all examiners in the faculty as members,
meet and ensure that all departments comply with Senate regulations on university examinations.
The result is put in the full glare of the entire faculty members and deliberated upon. The decision
of the Faculty Board must be complied with and where this is not so the issues are moved to Senate
for final determination.

7.6 University Senate

Results go to Senate in summary form and there the results are electronically presented analytically
and issues that escaped either the department and/or faculty are thrashed out or resolved.

7.7 Correction of Results

Results are only corrected after the Senate has given approval. The HOD collects and collates
students result complaints form through the departmental level advisers. The lecturer is required to
enter the corrections on the Student Result Complaint Form and the HOD, the Dean of Faculty and
the Senate Examination Committee must endorse the student result correction, in writing, before it
is updated on the student database. The student complaint form is shown in the Appendix.

15
7.8 Quality Assurance
The Department has a Quality Assurance Committee comprising all the Professors in the
Department and the Head of Department. They are to ensure compliance to Department standards
with respect to drafting of questions, preparation of marking schemes, and grading consistency.

7.9 Issuance of Results

Results are only issued after the Senate has given approval. In other words, no student is expected
to have any knowledge of the examination results until after the Senate meeting which considers
such results.

7.10 Examinations Malpractices

Any student caught involving in any form of examinations malpractices in the Examination Hall is
handed over to the University Securities and the case referred to the University Disciplinary
Committee. Any student found guilty is appropriately sanctioned according to the University
regulations.

7.11 Absence from Examinations

A student who absented himself or herself from the examinations is assumed to have carried the
course over, unless a case of serious reasons can be established.

7.12 Final Year Undergraduate Project

All final year students are assigned Supervisor to guide them through a project. The project consists
inn two stages, namely the Proposal defence a\and the final defence. the proposal stage is to ensure
that the project is adequate, achievable within the time frame and at affordable cost. The final
defence takes place at the end of the second semester. The final defence consists in two stages. The
first one is the internal defence among the Academic staff. The second stage is the assessment by
the External Examiner.

Detailed Course Description – 200 Level

The 200 level courses are foundation engineering courses designed to expose students to the
fundamentals of the engineering discipline in a broad sense. It is believed that exposing engineering
students to the various aspects of the discipline in the first two years of their study, equips them
with enough knowledge to determine their inclinations in terms of specialisation at a later stage.

This view is further strengthened by the fact that an appreciable number of engineering students
have rural backgrounds which limit their reception of engineering and the sub-disciplines therein. It
is believed that after the second year, the wide engineering horizon would have been sufficiently
illuminated for such students, who are now better placed, to make a choice.

In addition, a broad-based programme at these foundation levels becomes an asset to its

beneficiaries in the future when they are invariably required to play managerial, supervisory and/or
executive roles in engineering areas that may not be strictly their areas of specialisation.
