B.SC ch.8 (Cal) ch.4 (Method)

This document contains the questions for a B.Sc 4th Year mathematics series test. It includes 5 questions ranging from 7-8 marks each. Question 1 asks about finding the locus of a point moving such that its distance from a fixed point is proportional to its distance from a fixed plane. Question 2 defines ruled surfaces and asks to prove properties of hyperboloids and hyperbolic paraboloids. Question 3 asks to find the value of λ for which a given system of equations has non-trivial solutions. Question 4 asks to use Gauss-Jordan elimination to reduce a system of equations to echelon form. Question 5 asks to determine values of a and b to make a given par

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
B.Sc 4th Year
SERIES TEST TIME: 60 MINUTES

(ATTEMPT ANY FOUR QUESTIONS)

Q.1 (7)
A point moves such that the square of its distance from a fixed point is proportional to
its distance from a fixed plane. Show that its locus is a sphere.

Q.2 (8)
Define the ruled surface and prove that hyperboloids of one sheet and hyperbolic
paraboloide are ruled surface.

Q.3 (7)
For what value of λ the given equations have non-trivial solutions:-

( 3−λ ) x 1−x 2+ x 2=0

x 1−( 1− λ ) x 2 + x 3=0

x 1−x 2+ ( 1−λ ) x 3=0

Q.4 (8)
Use Gauss Jordon method to reduce the system to reduce echelon form, indicate the
operations you perform and determine the solution, if any, for the system.

6 x 1−6 x 2+ 6 x 3=6

2 x1 −4 x 2−6 x 3=12

10 x 1−5 x2 +5 x 3=30

Q.5 (7)
2 2
Determine a and b so as to make the paraboloid y=a x +b z orthogonal to the
ellipsoid x 2+ y 2+ 2 z 2=7 at the point P(1 , 2 ,1).
