Section 1: Project details

Project Name DESIGNING A POWER ELECTRONIC CONVERTER FOR OPTIMAL SEA

WAVE ENERGY HARVESTING

Arampath K.G.S.B. 2019/E/008

Team Member and E-
Number
Medagedara M.I.R. 2019/E/078

Principal Supervisor Prof. T.Thiruvaran, (Eng. R.Valluvan)

Associate Supervisors Eng. R. Valluvan, Eng. S. Sangar

Section 2: Project Objectives and Timelines

• Please list your objectives for the projects in bullet points.

➢ Designing a power electronic converter for optimal sea wave energy harvesting
while considering oscillating water columns.
➢ Design a prototype (scale down) version circuit and simulate it using accurate
software.
➢ Scaling down the devices for modularity.
➢ Finding a 100% electronic solution without mechanical voltage stabilization.
➢ Eliminating / Reducing voltage fluctuations
• Detailed Project Timeline for this Semester.

Section 3: Bi-weekly Project Progress

• Please list your current bi-weekly tasks in bullet points and note the extent to which
you have achieved them. (Indicate the % of completion)

➢ Regulator Circuit errors were fixed (100%)

➢ Finalized the Inverter circuit (100%)
➢ Finalized the simulation of the full circuit (90%)
➢ Finlazed the full circuit schematic (100%)
➢ Designed the Schematic using Altium Designer (90%)
• Please list any other achievements /improvements not listed in the previous plans.
(Optional)

➢ Designed the PCB layout using Altium Designer (85%)

• Please list any knowledge or skills you have obtained during the last two weeks.
(Optional)

PCB Schematic design using Altium Designer

PCB Layout Designing Basics using Altium Designer

• Indicate any challenges you faced to achieve your targets. Please indicate the
plans to overcome those challenges. (Optional)

• We struggled to learn Altium Designer because its learning curve is very high.
• Symbols and footprints for some components were not availble in the Altium itself-
We managed to get those from the SnapEDA website.
• Choosing a proper input method to emulate wave behaviors to the circuit was
challenging.
• Debugging simulation errors in proteus and Modelsim
Section 4: Supervisor Meeting

• Indicate the Date you met your supervisors (Including associate supervisors).
(Minimum two meetings should be done.)
Date Key Points Discussed Name of the Supervisors
present
27.09.2023 Discussed about the posibility of Eng. R.valluvan
function generator usage as input
signal for the circuit

04.10.2023 Discussed about the coupling of a Eng. R. valluvan

motor to another motor as a prime
mover with dynamic speed to wave
emulation

• Provide a list of the most recent bi-weekly demo outcomes. Include details on the
demonstrated features and their completion percentage compared to the expected
final demo. If available, please attach a photo from the demo.

Section 5: Next Bi-Weekly Plan

• Please indicate the next Demo plan. What are you going to show in that demo?

• Planning and testing about genrating input signal properly

• Finding the best motor coupling technique to reduce power loss
• Fabricating the PCB for first testings
• Checking heating conditions and design cooling solution (if needed)
• Planned tasks to be completed in the next two weeks.
