Chapter -1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction of the study-

The products to the customers a number of activities are being performed.
This is called marketing and it is an important function. Marketing is the
performance of business activities that directs the flow of goods and services from
producer to the customer. It is the activity that directs to satisfy the human needs
through exchange process. Marketing starts with the identification of a specific
need of customers and ends with satisfaction of that need. The customer is found
in the beginning and end of marketing process. In marketing a large number of
activities are performed. Promotion is one of the elements of marketing mix.
Promotion decisions are taken simultaneously with other decisions like finding
target group, determining objectives, budgeting for promotion, launching of new
products, distribution. “Sales promotions include incentive offering and interest
creating activities which are generally short term marketing events other than
advertising, personal selling, publicity and direct marketing.
Indian industry is a fast developing industry. Fast Moving Consumer Goods
(FMCG) are more in demand and frequently purchased by customers. These goods
include all consumable goods (other than pulses and grains) and consumers buy at
regular intervals in small quantities. Main items in this category are detergents,
soaps, shaving products, shampoos, toothpastes and brushes, packed food stuffs,
household accessories, creams, oils, tea, coffee etc. Contribution of FMCG sector
in every economy is significant. Now, due to globalization, every economy is
facing tough competition. Entries of MNCs and cheaper import have made the
situation more difficult. To carry out the business in this sector, it has become very
difficult. The main objective of sales promotion is to increase the sales of products
in short term by influencing the behaviour of buyers. Sales promotion methods are
many and these are selected as per the target groups. For this purpose, a sales
promotion strategy is to be prepared to achieve the objectives effectively. Sales
promotion strategy directs the manager in selection of parties, methods of sales
promotion, implementation of methods and measuring effectiveness of whole
efforts regarding sales promotion. Most of the companies have applied various
elements of promotion mix. Promotion mix elements include advertising, publicity,

sales promotion, personal selling and packaging. Sales promotion is one of them
and it is our concerned topic. In present competitive situation most of MNCs had
developed sales promotion strategy in selection of parties, techniques and
managing sales promotion techniques effectively and efficiently. This strategy
provides competitive advantage to the companies in the market to grow, stabilize
and excel in business performance. To carry out the research study the following
limitations were expected and faced during the research study:
a) Availability of secondary data from sales records of the companies were
difficult.
b) Salesmen, customers, dealers and retailers were reluctant or hesitant to share
data.
c) Management may not like to share their views on the topic.
d) Time, cost and location factors become major difficulties in completion of
research.
e) Sample size may not be exact representative of the universe.

Marketing activities are nothing but how you are going to handle the
marketing mix (Price, product, place, promotion, positioning, people, and physical
evidence) in order to market your product successfully. One of the advantages of
the marketing considerations with a view to finding out how best to allocate their
resources. Another one of the advantages of the marketing activity is that when
companies know what type of marketing plan they want to implement, they can
conduct the necessary research needed to fully implement the plan in conjunction
with achieving maximum customer satisfaction. A well-blended marketing
activity helps with goal achievement, which will constitute the companies tactical-
tool-kit for establishing strong positioning in the target markets.
Promotion is the effective tool in every business. The main aim of
promotion is to ensure that customers are aware of the existence and positioning
of products. Promotion is also used to persuade customers that the product is
better than competing products and to remind customers about why they may want
to bay. In fact, promotion has many potential uses in business. It can be used to:
Increase sales, Attract new customers, Encourage customer loyalty, Encourage
trial, Create awareness, Inform Remind potential, customers, Reassure new

customers, Change attitudes, Create an image, Position a product, Encourage

brand switching, To support a distribution channel. There are several five main
aspect of promotional mix that advertisement, sales promotion, public relation,
publicity, direct marketing. From the promotional mix sales promotion is used in
many industries as effective tool in many industries.
“Sales promotion is an activity designed to boost the sales of a product
or service for the short period of time. It may include an advertising campaign,
increased PR activity, a free-sample campaign, offering free gifts or trading
stamps, arranging demonstration or exhibition, setting up competitions with
attractive prizes, temporary price reductions,”.
Seller introduces new product or new brand in the market by the use of
sales promotion. When an economy is going through a recessionary phase,
customer becomes price Sensitive. Marketer can tackle this problem with the help
of promotional tools like offering gifts, or discount coupons, gift contests, etc. to
the customer. Excellent techniques can be used to achieve other objectives such as
building brand loyalty or creating product awareness.
Hence the basic purpose of this project is to study the different sales
promotion techniques at Indapur dairy & milk products ltd. as well as to introduce
other sales promotion techniques that may male Indapur dairy & milk products ltd
stand firm in the market with increased sales and growth. With this study Indapur
dairy & milk products ltd will also generate new accounts and create a different
mark in the FMCG sector. This study will also reveal the most effective
techniques of sales promotion to entice customer.

1.2 Need of the study

Sales promotion acts as a bridge between advertising and personal selling.
Due to the adversity of markets, the importance of sales promotion has increased
tremendously. Sales promotion helps remove the consumer‟s dissatisfaction about
a particular product, manufacturer, and create brand-image in the minds of the
consumers and the users.
Sales promotional devices are the only promotional devices available at
the point-of-purchase. An advertising medium reaches the prospects at their
homes, offices, etc. and may soon be forgotten. The sales promotional devices at

the point-of-purchase stimulate the customers to make purchase promptly on the

spot.

1.3 Scope of the study

1) Planning sales promotion: The starting point is the identification of the target
audience and the specific objectives that the sales promotion intends to
achieve. Sales promotion can be aimed at one or more of the following:
consumers; the „trade‟ (retailers, wholesalers, distributors etc.); the sales force.
2) consumer sales promotion Coupons The consumer must be in possession of a
coupon or voucher of a particular value which can then be „redeemed‟ at a
local store to obtain the product or products named on the voucher at the usual
price, less the value of the voucher.
3) Self liquidating offer An example here is where a manufacturer of a brand of
canned food purchases a quantity of kitchen knives from a supplier at a price
of £1 per knife. The food manufacturer then „offers‟ to sell the knives to the
consuming public at the cost price of £1 or thereabouts, plus proof of purchase
4) Trade promotion Frequently used trade promotions include:
Discounts/cash allowances: a percentage discount or cash allowance given for
each bulk case purchased; Additional products with order: extra products
given with each unit ordered e.g. if a case of 12 is purchased, one extra case is
given free (colloquially called a „baker‟s dozen‟);
5) sales force promotion This is a popular area for the application of sales
promotional techniques like sales contests, bonus prizes and sales incentives
and gifts.
6) Appropriateness of sales promotion The most appropriate tools in this context
vary according to type of product market, sales promotion objectives, target
audience and the emphasis of marketing strategy,
7) Development in sales promotion research and practice
Sales promotion is constantly being researched and techniques are being
developed and used alongside traditional methods. Some interesting
developments are: In-store sales promotion:
8) Have one on me An example of how point-of-sale can be used as part of a
planned promotional campaign is that developed by the design and
promotional agency, The House, for J. D. Wetherspoon Company.

1.4 Basic Theoretical Concepts

Definition of Sales promotion-
Sales promotion refers to those marketing activities that stimulate consumer
shows and expositions
Introduction –
The role of selling has become more complex because producers are
more technical, buyers are more sophisticated and the competition has become
more intense. This has necessitated the need for proper flow or communication
from the producer to the consumer either along with the product or well in
advance of the introduction of a product in to the market. Successful marketing
consists in offering the right product at right price at the right place and time with
right promotion. Promotion is an exercise in information, persuasion and
influence. Promotion has come to mean to overall co -ordination of advertising,
sales promotion, publicity, public relations and direct marketing. Promotion is a
helping function designed to make all other marketing activities more effective
and efficient. Advertising and Sales promotion are the central elements in a
company communication strategy.
From the promotional element sales promotions are used widely in many
industries and especially by marketers selling to consumers.
Sales Promotion refer to those activities (Other than advertising personal
selling and publicity) which stimulate market demand for product through short
promotion techniques act as a bridge between product and the consumer.

period of time. It may include an advertising campaign, increased PR activity, a
free-sample campaign, offering free gifts or trading stamps, arranging
demonstrations or exhibitions, setting up competitions with attractive prizes,
temporary price reductions, door-to-door calling telemarketing, and personal
letters on other methods.”
Sales promotion describes promotional methods using special short-term
techniques to persuade members of a target market to respond or undertake certain
activity. As a reward, marketers offer something of value to those responding
generally in the form of lower cost of ownership for a purchased product (e.g.
lower purchase price, money back) or the inclusion of additional value-added
material (e.g. something more for the same price)
The factors that distinguish between the two promotional approaches are:
1. Whether the promotion involves a short-terms value proposition (e.g., the
contest is only offered for a limited period of time).
2. The customer must perform activity in order to be eligible to receive the value
proposition (e.g. customer must enter contest). The inclusion of a timing
constraint and an activity requirement are hallmark of sales promotion.
Sales promotions are used by a wide range of organizations in both the
consumer and business markets, though the frequency and spending levels are
much greater for consumer products marketers. One estimate by the Promotion
Marketing Association suggest that in the US alone spending on sales promotion
exceeds that the advertising.

Consumer Sales Promotion-

Sales promotions targeted at the consumer are called consumer sales
promotions. Consumer sales promotions encompass a variety of short-term
promotional techniques designed to induce customers to respond in some way.
The most popular consumer sales promotions are directly associated with product
purchasing. These promotions are intended to enhance the value of product
purchases by either reducing the overall cost of the product (i.e., get same product
but for less money) or by adding more benefit to the regular purchase price (i.e.,
get more for the money).
While tying a promotion to an immediate purchase is a major use of consumer
sales promotion, it is not the only one. As we noted above, promotion techniques
can be used to achieve other objectives such as building brand loyalty or creating
product awareness. Consequently, a marketer‟s promotional toolbox contains a
large variety of consumer promotions.
Dealer Sales Promotion-
Sales promotions targeted at retailers and wholesalers called trade sales
promote effectively in this dealer sales promotion technique are included point-of-
purchase Displays, Advertising Support Programs, Short Term Allowances, Sales
Incentives of Push Money, Promotional Products, Trade Show.

1.6 Review of Literature

[1] (Philip Kotler, 2006 and Shira, 2003):
A consumer price deal saves the buyer money when a product is
purchases. The main types of price deals include discounts, bonus pack deals,
refunds or rebates, and coupons. Price deals are usually intended to encourage
trial use of a new product or line extension, to recruit new buyers for a mature
product, or to convince existing customers to increase their purchase,
accelerate their use, or purchase multiple units. Price deals work most
effectively when price is the consumer‟s foremost criterion or when brand
loyalty is sales promotion has growth as part of their buying decision criteria.
It provides reluctant decision makers with an incentive to make choices by

increasing the value offered by a particular brand. Second, the increasing

tendency of businesses to focus on short-term results has helped super growth
in sales promotion, which can provide an immediate boost in sales.
[2] (Adereni, 2003):
New approaches are promptly cloned by competitors as each marketer
tries to be more creative, more attention getting, or more effective in attracting
the Attention of consumers and the trade. Finally, consumers and resellers
have learned how to milk the sales promotion game. Consumers may wait to
buy certain items knowing that prices will eventually be reduced, for example,
while resellers have become experts at negotiation deals and manipulating
competitors against one another.
[3] Mr. Swagat Kumar Rath (in 2008):
In his research paper title, “New trends in Sales promotion
techniques” studied it difficult to satisfy the customers due to customers wants
is unlimited still the company should adopt different strategies with respect to
time as well as change in customer‟s want for retaining them and approaches
them through promotional activities. Promotional activity can predict the
behavior and provides data for innovation in sales promotion techniques and
how to change the likelihood of the customers and maximize the quick sales
lead.
[4] Veldandi ramchander Rao (in 2011)
In his research paper titled “Measuring the effectiveness of the sales
promotions of Hyundai Motors” investigates effectiveness of promotional
strategies of Hyundai cars. To study the sales promotions done at Hyundai
motors to maximize the sales and capture a larger market share. Analysis of
the effectiveness of each promotional strategy for cars. The purpose of sales
promotion is to stimulate, motivate and influence the purchase and other
desired behavioral responses of the firm‟s customers.

3.2 Overview of dairy industry in India-

India with the total milk production of 109 million tones is the world's
highest milk-producing country for the past one decade now and accounted for
about 15% of the world milk production in 2009. The importance of dairy
enterprise in the national economy can be gauged from the fact that the value of
output from milk group is highest among all the agricultural commodities,
accounting for nearly one fourth of the value of output from agricultural sector.
Dairying is one of the most important means of providing livelihood and
nutritional security to the rural masses. The livestock activities, among which
dairy farming predominates, employ about 8.5 million workers in the country.
Milk and milk products account for 9.2 and 12.4 percent of protein intake in rural
and urban areas, respectively, which is higher than the protein intake through non-
vegetarian animal products.
Dairy production in India, which has seen great increase over the post-
independence period, has grown into a thriving enterprise; thanks to the policy
decisions related to systematic breeding, improved feeding and superior health

care management over the period. These positives notwithstanding, the system is
confronting some of the major constraints that hinder inclusive development of
the dairy sector in the country. Apart from low productivity of the animals, there
are many other problems like, large human and livestock population and its
pressure on land, degraded pasture lands, shortage of feed ingredients and fodders,
which need to be targeted. While the agricultural sector is witnessing a kind of
stagnation or a decline in growth rate in areas where the green revolution earlier
brought a new dawn for human survival against hunger and malnutrition, the dairy
sector is showing a better promise.
