OmniSX - MX2 - Training - 16L TOFD FFT Probe Analysis

This document discusses using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis on the OmniScan SX/MX2 ultrasound system to measure TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) probe characteristics. It describes how having a range of probe sizes, frequencies, and dampening is important for optimal TOFD inspections. The document outlines how to perform FFT measurements on an unrectified A-scan to determine a probe's center frequency, bandwidth, and other specs, and compare the results to the probe's certification sheet. It emphasizes that probe selection, along with wedge angle and position, are key factors for high quality TOFD inspections.

OmniScan SX \ MX2 Training Program

TOFD FFT Probe Analysis

OmniScan SX \ MX2 TOFD – FFT Probe Analysis Overview
 For the service company offering high level TOFD services in a wide range of
environments and applications, the need for a range of TOFD probes and wedges in
the toolbox cannot be over emphasized.
 A range of probes in different size, frequency, dampening, and all of the other factors
that separate one model from another will ensure optimum results with minimum
engineering.
OmniScan SX \ MX2 TOFD – FFT Probe Analysis Overview cont.
 The probe that is optimum for one component may not be optimum for another.
 The weld process, weld procedure, quality and unique properties of the steel, surface
conditions, etc. will effect TOFD probe results differently.
 There is no faster track for optimized TOFD results than experimentation on EDM
notches of known length and height in the actual weld bevel to be inspected using a
range of probes and wedge angles.
 The right probe, with the right wedge angle, from the right position will determine
TOFD results more than any other software feature or instrument specification.
OmniScan SX \ MX2 TOFD – FFT Probe Analysis Overview cont.
 The OmniScan has a built in tool to measure probe frequency called FFT.
 The measurement can only be made live with an unrectified A-scan.
 FFT (Fast fourier transform) is an algorithm used to compute the discrete fourier
transform (DFT) and its inverse for converting time to frequency.
 The OmniScan FFT function is used for measurement of probe center frequency,
bandwidth, maximum frequency, and high\low pass frequency at –6dB and -20dB as
per EN and ASTM specifications.
 The exact probe center frequency and bandwidth will be affected by the material,
sound path and reflector used for testing as attenuation filters upper frequency
bandwidth.

Frequency (MHz)
OmniScan SX \ MX2 TOFD – FFT Use
 Set the UT range so that the signal to be used is visible in the unrectified A-scan.
 Set gate A over the signal to be used for the measurement and increase the gain
between 50-100% amplitude.
 Note: If using a TOFD group for the FFT measurement, the A-scan point count is
automatically adjusted with no compression. If using an unrectified A-scan from a
phased array group the point count and range must be manually adjusted for a
compression rate of 1 (No compression) to ensure a valid and precise FFT frequency
measurement.
OmniScan SX \ MX2 TOFD – FFT Use cont.
 Select >Preferences > FFT and turn FFT on.
 The probe frequency statistics are displayed above the frequency waveform.

Time (usec)

Frequency (MHz)
OmniScan SX \ MX2 TOFD – FFT Use cont.
 Upon turning FFT off, if a probe was either selected from the database or entered as
a custom probe, a report of the FFT measurements is created on the flashcard in the
:\User\Probe folder.
OmniScan SX \ MX2 TOFD – FFT Use cont.
 The FFT results can be compared to the original probe certification sheets delivered
with every new probe for any frequency shift, probe deterioration, or waveform
change.
