Sheet 5-Dynamic 2

This document contains 11 problems related to dynamics involving calculations of acceleration for objects moving in circular paths or along curved paths. The problems include calculating the acceleration of a bull-roarer spinning in a circle, a car braking on a curved highway, determining the minimum radius of a highway for a given acceleration, finding the velocity and acceleration of a crate moving along a track, and calculating the acceleration of various vehicles traveling along circular or curved paths where their speed or acceleration is defined by an equation involving time or distance.

GE105 (DYNAMICS) Exercise No.5 Associate Prof. Dr. Islam M.

Eldesoky

Prob. 1
A bull-roarer is a piece of wood
that produces a roaring sound
when attached to the end of a
string and whirled around in a
circle. Determine the magnitude of
the normal acceleration of a bull
roarer when it is spun in a circle of
radius 0.9 m at a speed of 20 m/s. Ans.[ 444 m/s2]

Prob. 2
A motorist is traveling on a curved section
of highway of radius 250 m at the speed of
90 km/h. The motorist suddenly applies
the brakes, causing the automobile to slow
down at a constant rate. Knowing that
after 8 s the speed has been reduced to 60
km/h, determine the acceleration of the
automobile immediately after the brakes
have been applied.

Prob. 3
Determine the smallest radius that should be
used for a highway if the normal component
of the acceleration of a car traveling at 72
km/h is not to exceed 0.8 m/s2
Ans.[ 500 m]

Prob. 4
When x = 10 ft, the crate has a
speed of 20 ft/s which is
increasing at 6 ft/s2 . Determine
the direction of the crate’s
velocity and the magnitude of the
crate’s acceleration at this
instant. Ans. [39.8 deg., 16.3 ft/s2]

Prob. 5
The boat is traveling along
the circular path with a
speed of v = 0.0625 m/s ,
where t is in seconds.
Determine the magnitude
of its acceleration when
t = 10 s. Ans. [1.59 m/s2]

Prob. 6
If the motorcycle has a
deceleration of  0.001 s m/s2

and its speed at position A is 25

m/s, determine the magnitude of
its acceleration when it passes
point B. Ans. [1.42 m/s2]

Prob. 7

If the car decelerates uniformly

along the curved road from 25
m/s at A to 15 m/s at C,
determine the acceleration of the
car at B.
Ans. [1.18 m/s2]

Prob. 8

The car is traveling along the

road with a speed of v = (2 s) m/s,
where s is in meters. Determine
the magnitude of its acceleration
when s = 10 m.
Ans. [40.8 m/s2]

Prob. 9
The car travels up the hill
with a speed of v = (0.2s) m/s,
where s is in meters,
measured from A. Determine
the magnitude of its
acceleration when it is at point
s = 50 m, where r = 500 m.
Ans. [2.01 m/s2]

Prob. 10
The car travels along the circular path
such that its speed is increased by

0.05 et  m/s2 , where t is in seconds.

Determine the magnitudes of its

velocity and acceleration after the car
has travelled s = 18 m starting from
rest. Neglect the size of the car.

Prob. 11

The box of negligible size is sliding down along a curved path defined

by the parabola y = 0.4x 2 . When it is at A ( x A = 2 m , yA = 1.6 m ), the

speed is v = 8 m/s and the increase in speed is dv/dt = 4 m/s2 .

Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the box at this
instant.
