more towards space than towards time. Com m onality of place, as much as of past, defines an Indian (Anishinaabe) tribe.

The lakes, rivers, and land are important to the Anishinaabeg. The lakes are a source for our food and to quench our thirst; the land
provides us the medicines, food, and other things we need to survive as a people; the rivers provide us with food and at one time were
our highways. As Anishinaabe, we share these things with our brothers and sisters; the four legged people, the winged people, the
water people, and those that crawl upon the earth. This atlas encompasses only a small portion of the Anishinaabe territories and
includes those lands ceded to the United States by the Anishinaabe people in the 1836 (Upper Peninsula of Michigan portion), 1837,
and the 1842 Treaties.

We recognize that there are names of locations that we might have missed or that a place might have a different name locally than
what we have found. The names in the atlas should be used as a starting point for learning. Talk to the elders in your community to
find out if they pronounce the names of local areas differently.

We also recognize, and acknowledge, that there are many dialects of Anishinaabemowin throughout the ceded territories, and even
throughout some of the larger communities. Because of the dialect difference the names of locations might be spelled or pronounced
differently. Anishinaabemowin is a dynamic language and the dialect differences should be celebrated rather than denigrated.

The spellings in this atlas have utilized the double vowel system of Anishinaabemowin spelling.

individual maps depicting the Ojibwe
language name for geographic place
names in the 1836, 1837, and 1842,
ceded territories of Minnesota,
Wisconsin, and Michigan. The spatial
extent of individual map panels was
chosen to provide the most convenient
representation of those named
features. Therefore, there is not a
constant spatial scale used in this
atlas. As such, this atlas is not MAP LEGEND
intended for distance calculation or
navigation. Its sole purpose is to
illustrate the names that native peoples

 The Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) is an inter-tribal, co-management natural resources agency committed to the imple­
mentation of off-reservation treaty rights on behalf of its eleven Ojibwe member bands.
Formed in 1984 and exercising authority specifically delegated by its member bands, GLIFWC's mission is to help ensure significant, off-reservation
harvests while protecting the resources for generations to come.
GLIFWC's member bands are:
IN MICHIGAN-The Bay Mills Indian Community, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and the Lac Vieux Desert band.
IN WISCONSIN-The Bad River, Lac Courte Oreilles, Lac du Flambeau, Mole Lake/Sokaogon, Red Cliff, and St. Croix bands.
IN MINNESOTA-The Fond du Lac and Mille Lacs bands.
GLIFWC's policy is set by the Board of Commissioners composed of the tribal chairperson from each member band or a designee. Two standing
committees, the Voigt lntertribal Task Force and the Great Lakes Fisheries Committee, make recommendations on resource management policies to the board.
GLIFWC has six divisions including Administration, Biological Services, Enforcement, Intergovernmental Affairs, Planning and Development, and
Public Information.
