COMMUNICATION MODELS

Communication can be a one-way or a two- way process.

Communication as a one-way process can be illustrated in Aristotle’s
Model and Lasswell’s Model of Communication. In these models, the
sender is active while the receiver is passive during the
communication process.
Therefore, the sender has a very important role in delivering his /her
message.

Communication can be a two-way process. Transactional model shows

this. In this model, both the sender and the receiver are active during
the communication process. Thus, both of them are playing very
important roles.

Shannon and Weaver Model

In doing so, we may also be exchanging value to one another, for
example in a greeting where each person gives the other a sense of
comfort through a defined transactional ritual.
The actual transaction can be highly dependent on context. For
example, the transactions between people at home is often quite
different between those at work or on the street.
GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Since communication is a two-way process, it is important that you

know the principles to be observed to make it effective. For both oral
and written communication, you should be able to apply the following
principles:
1. Know your purpose in communication. Is it to inform, to
entertain, or to persuade? While you may have more than one
purpose, there is still a more dominant objective or reason why
you communicate.
2. Know your audience. This will dictate the speaking or writing
style you are going to employ. Consider the age, educational
background, profession, culture, and other salient features of
your listeners or readers.
3. Know your topic. You communicate essentially because you
want to share something.
4. Adjust your speech or writing to the context of the situation.
Example: language being used
5. Work on feedback given to you. Positive criticisms are important
as you learn to address them.

PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE ORAL COMMUNICATION

1. Be clear with your purpose. You should know the goal of your
talk.
2. Be complete with the message you deliver.
3. Be concise. Avoid wordiness in your statements.
4. Be natural with your delivery. Have confidence in your delivery.
5. Be specific and timely with your feedback. Inputs are helpful
when provided on time.
PRINCIPLE OF EFFECTIVE WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
1. Be clear. Be guided by your objective in communicating.
2. Be concise. Be brief in telling your audience the main points of
your speech.
3. Be concrete. Support your claims with enough facts and
information.
4. Be correct. Always revise and edit your work.
5. Be coherent. Always convey a logical message
6. Be complete. Placing yourself on the shoes of your audience who
are eager to listen to you is a must.
7. Be courteous. Use words in a friendly manner.

ETHICS OF COMMUNICATION.
This emphasizes that morals influence the behavior of individual,
group, or organization thereby affecting communication.
Be guided by the following to achieve ethical communication:
1. Establish a value system that will pave the way for the
development of your integrity as a person. One’s behavior and
decision-making style affect the operations of an organization.
2. Provide complete and accurate information. The data you
provide should always be contextualized and correct, whether it
is needed or not.
3. Disclose vital information adequately and appropriately. Never
keep information that are necessary for transparency.
Observing the code of ethics, therefore, paves the way for the
attainment of the desired results leading to success of an individual or
the entire company.
