in late 2019[1]. The WHO declared this emergency a global pandemic on March 11, 2020 [2]. The spread of
this virus was not uniform across the globe. It affected different regions differently due to their
circumstances. This pandemic was one of the most death-dealing pandemics, such as Ebola, MERS-CoV,
SARS, and the famous Spanish Flu. COVID-19 impacted every aspect of life: from global, economic, and
social issues to significant shortages in life’s desideratum. False propagation through media and other
sources escalated mental tension. In such a situation of uncertainty, technology helped the community
analyze and make decisions to combat this virus. Mainstream media and social media became the highest
data contributors, and such data can be used, in addition to other various things, to analyze public
sentiments and perceptions from time to time.
History states that it is usually time-taking to overcome pandemics like the coronavirus. One of the primary
reasons is that the general public gets panicked due to circulation of misinformation, negativity,
propaganda, and a few unpopular decisions. In such a scenario, sentiment or opinion analysis can help
authorities to understand people’s sentiments and attitudes and carry out the necessary messaging policy
and essential decisions. Natural Language Processing is a field of study that can be very useful for such
purposes. Sarcasm, the use of words to mean the opposite of what one says, is one of those factors that
can affect this process. To get genuine insights and understand the correct sentimental class, first, we need
to check whether a comment is sarcastic or not.
In late 2019, when the Coronavirus pandemic emerged in China, Pakistan, like every other country, also
implemented several anti-pandemic measures from time to time to control the spread of this disease.
These measures affected public life. Pakistan has faced five COVID-19 waves until April 28, 2022. There
have been more than 1.5M registered cases, and over 30K people have lost their lives [11]. Pakistan started
its mass vaccination program in February 2021, and as of May 6, 2022, almost 60.8% of the population has
been partially or fully vaccinated, as shown in Fig. 2.
As stated above, it is important to consider public sentiments and the factors affecting their analysis. The
motivation behind this study is to detect the presence of sarcasm in people’s opinions about the
vaccination program initiated by the Government of Pakistan and to avoid being misled by the sarcastic
tone of their opinionated comments.
In recent years, the rapid growth of Web technologies has significantly increased users’ data. People can
freely share their ideas, express their opinions and discuss various knowledgeable things through online
social media platforms, forums, and blogs [12]. They have become among the largest data centers in the
world [14]. Social media users’content is usually very rich in sentiments and often provides additional
behavioral information about the users. When such information is analyzed, it becomes a key factor and
significantly improves the decision-making process for any decisive authority. However, manually
processing such a large amount of user-generated data remains challenging. Sentiment analysis, a
technique for enlightening intuition from unstructured content by automatically examining the public’s
sentiments, can help one understand users’ feelings about an entity and make future policies accordingl
