CHAPTER Ⅰ

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

Cutting Class is a used term, that actually means intentionally not attending a required class in

one’s formal education without a valid excuse or reason. Cutting of Classes In the Philippines is

a very common problem for every school both public and private where there inefficient security

to monitor all the students.

The research entitled "FACTORS INFLUENCING HABITUAL CUTTING CLASSES OF

GRADE 12 STUDENTS IN SAN MIGUEL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL". The researcher

noticed that one of the common issue in San Miguel National Highschool that still not resolved

was the students habitual cutting classes behavior.This study seeks to identify causes and major

cause that leads the students to develop the habit of skipping classes and also addess its negative

effects to the student in grade 12. The students need to understand that attending class is very

important for good education that students need for their future

Based on Mondares, Baring, Marikit and Dayday (2019). “The problem with cutting classes in

Students has enough period of growth and development. This development starts at the comfort

of their homes, families, and friends. Because of that, cutting classes will be the result of their

problems. Thus, teachers and the school staff will face sorts of problems from their respective

student, such as discomfort for any school teachers and staff.

”This mean that the root of cutting classes can start based on the problem in their homes,

families, and friends. The one who will be affected in the behavior of students cutting classes is

not only the parents and students but also the teacher who will get in trouble when something

bad happen to the student that skip their class. In addition Gaborno (2020), stated that “Good

education is constructive in nature which constructs our futureforever. The more knowledge we

get, we grow and develops more in the life. Being well educated never only means to earn

certificates and good salary from the recognize and reputedorganization companies or institution

also means to be a good social person. ”We need to be wise to know if the things we do can help

us or not because by skipping classes the students lose the opportunity to learn new knowledge

that they can use in every day life. As mentioned by Lleyton Bruan (2017), “In school, we learn

a lot of things that cannot be learned in the outside world, that is the reason why attending class

is a very important in a student's life.” Based on this statement, we all know that there's

something you can learn only at school. The knowledge that they acquire in school can be their

weapon, which they can use to have a wonderful life someday. Thus, attending classes is very

important for the students

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to understand as to why students are engaging cutting classes despite the

underlying negative consequences. This research also aims to answer the questions as to how this

practice affects the students in their studies. This research aims to answer the above mentioned

queries through the research questions stated below:

what are the causes behind the habitual cutting classes of grade 12 students?

1.1 Laziness

Students who are skipping class or cutting class are because of being laziness and a common

reason is they lack of motivation,When a student do not see the importance of their learning,

they may become uninterested leading to laziness

1.2 Peer influence

As they engage and manage new structures around friendships, beliefs, and where they fit in,

students commonly experience peer influence. Students may act or speak in ways that they

would not normally do or say due to peer influence. Peer influence to work harder in class or to

push past personal boundaries doesn't have to be a bad thing. It can even be beneficial. On the

other hand, some influences can have a negative impact, such as peer influence to engage in

risky behavior like gang fighting and skipping class or to treat others unfairly.

1.3 Ineffective teaching style

Students who are skipping class or cutting class are because of the reason of teaching style of the

teacher some are getting bored and some are getting irritated by the way of how the teacher is

teaching others just don't like there teacher the students are not focusing on their class and other

just skipped class

What are the negative effects of cutting classes to students except in their academic

performance?

1.1 Limited teacher support

In some cases, students may not have access to supportive learning resources, textbooks, or the

internet, causing them to feel that attending class might be less beneficial than studying alone.

1.2 Wasting Their Parents Money

Students who are skipping or cutting classes sometimes use their allowance to go to computer

shop to play with their friends without acknowledging their parents hardwork just to support

them. They sometimes go to any places like fast food restaurants to bond with their peers instead

of putting it on good use. Some students also use their allowance to buy illegal drugs without

thinking how their parents sacrifice their blood, sweat, and tears just to sustain their needs. They

didn't think what will their parents think if they spend their allowance just to skip their classes

with their friends.

1.3 Missed Learning Opportunities

Attending portunities classes provides valuable opportunities for students to learn from their

teachers, ask questions, clarify doubts, and engage in collaborative learning. By cutting classes,

students miss out on these , which can obstruct their academic growth and development.

what are the characteristic profiles of the respondents who often do cutting classes?

1.1gender

This is a kind of characteristic of a person whether male or female. So we conduct thus study to

know which gender is most likely do cutting class.

1.2 strand

Strand refers to the specific field of study that students can choose to specialize in, that will help

them to decide what course they will take in college.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aimed to determine the factors that can influence of habitual cutting classes of a

students. Additionally, this study wants to know the other cause of doing cutting classes of a

student. This study conducting at San Miguel National High School for the year 2023-2024. In

this study the our respondents are Grade 12 Senior High School students. The topics covered in

this research include only the cutting classes of students. Their reasons on why they are not

attending their classes, what subject they usually ditched.

The topics covered in this research include only the skipping classes of students. What are the

factors influence the Habitual Cutting Classes behavior of students, determining the age and

strand of students who does cutting classes. On the other hand, the topics that are not covered in

our study are the following; what subject students usually ditched, how cutting classes has

affected the student's study and the experiences of students who choose to skip their classes.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to know the reasons why do these students cut their classes, so that the

reseachers would be able to find ways to encourage them not to waste their opportunity to study,

and also to deliver this information to the teachers and parents for them to resolve or prevent

these students from cutting classes.

For the students - They can raise awareness about the potential consequences of absenteeism,

motivating them to attend classes regularly and engage more in their education. Understanding

the reasons behind class-cutting can also help students access appropriate support and resources

to address any challenges they may face, ultimately promoting their academic success and

personal growth.

For the parents - Can empower them with a deeper understanding of their children's educational

challenges, enabling more informed support and involvement in their learning. Additionally, this

research can foster improved collaboration between parents and schools to address the

underlying causes of absenteeism, ultimately benefiting students' educational progress and well-

being.

For the teacher - Provide insights into effective strategies for reducing absenteeism and

enhancing student engagement. This research can help teachers create a more conducive learning

environment and reduce their workload, ultimately improving the quality of education they

provide.

For the future researcher - Offering a framework to delve deeper into the complex issue of

absenteeism in educational settings. It provides a basis for conducting more focused and in-depth

research, enabling future researchers to explore innovative solutions and interventions to reduce

Definition of Terms

For the researcher’s understanding, the following terms are defined as used in this study:

Behavior- is the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others. It is a

student's attitude why their do cutting class.

Cutting class- is a skipping or missing a class in a school. Problem or issue that is often a

problem in school.

Habitual- is regularly or repeatedly doing or practicing something or acting in some manner. It

is a habitual behavior of a student why their do cutting class.
