Congratulations in reaching this far! As you have learned from the previous modules,
different dimensions of various media and information formats have been discussed
and depicted each of its importance in one’s daily activities. This time, you will be

3
able to learn more about manipulatives or interactive media. For sure, you have
engaged in various forms of interactive media nowadays.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. explain what manipulatives/interactive media are;
2. compare the different platforms and uses of manipulatives/interactive
media software; and
3. discuss the types of interactivity and their purpose.

What’s

In

In the previous lesson about motion and information media, you have learned
how to create a story board and know its purpose in producing a creative motion-
based presentation. This time, a sample story board will be given and your task is to
give your analysis and reaction about it.

Activity 1. Storyboard

Read the details of each key scene shown in the story board below. Then, your
task is to provide a reaction based on the given questions in each item. Use the
following emojis as answers . Provide a short explanation why you
have reacted as such. Draw your answers and write your explanations in another
piece of paper.

What is It

Interactive media is a method of communication in which the program's

outputs depend on the user's inputs, and the user's inputs in turn affect the
program's outputs. Interactive media engage the user and interact with him or her
in a way that non-interactive media do not. Websites and video games are two
common types of interactive media.

Interactivity is the communication process that takes place between humans

and computer software. The most constant form of interactivity is typically found in
games, which need a continuous form of interactivity with the gamer. Database
applications and other financial, engineering and trading applications are also
typically very interactive.

One area where interactivity is most useful is in online training. Interactivities

in this area allow a person to interact with the course in terms of action and/or
thinking.

Examples using interactive media:

Social media (Facebook)

send friend request respond to friend request
like a post follow a site
comment on a friend’s post upload a file
chat with a friend send private message

Online booking
search for flights
booked a flight and paid through credit card
web-check-in

Different platforms of interactive media:

Mobile applications
a software application developed specifically for use on small, wireless
computing devices such as smartphones and tablets, rather than
desktop or laptop computers

3D TV
a television display technology that enables a three-dimensional effect,
so that viewers perceive that an image has depth as well as height and
width, like objects in the real world

6
Video games (multi-player)
a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a
computer program on a television screen or other display screen.
Multiplayer games allow two or more players to play with one another
or play together

Role-playing games (RPG)

a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional
setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a
narrative, either through literal acting or through a process of
structured decision-making or character development

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG)

any story-driven online video game in which a player, taking on the
persona of a character in a virtual or fantasy world, interacts with many
other players

Interactive websites (pools, surveys, exams, exercises)

an Internet page that uses different kinds of software to create a rich,
interactive experience for the user i.e. it facilitates the user to be
actively engaged with the site

Virtual reality and immersive environments

the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or
environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical
way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet
with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors

Social media
websites or online services where users (actual people) are the creators
and consumers of the content, and where social interactions
(commenting, liking, posting, talking) are the main features of content.
Examples are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, etc.

Interacting with Social Media

Here are the different ways of interacting with the internet:

Online shopping: compare prices

compare features of similar items
add to cart
choose payment type
track delivery
get advice from experts
search products
check local availability
get product recommendations

7
Online gaming: choose a game
play with computer
play with others
choose a level
in-game customization

Online classes interact with content

interact with instructors
interact with classmates

Chat: group chat

search groups

The following emerging interactive media are:

✓ Interactive television (also known as ITV or iTV)

A form of media convergence, adding data services to traditional
television technology. Throughout its history, these have included on-demand
delivery of content, as well as new uses such as online shopping, banking,
and so forth.
ITV enables the viewer to issue commands and give feedback
information through an electronic device called a setup box. The viewer can
select which program or movie to watch, at what time, and can place orders
in response to commercials. New setup boxes also allow access to email and
e-commerce applications via internet.

✓ Allow viewers to participate in games shows

Viewers compete with on-screen contestants.

✓ Select alternate endings to their favorite program

A technology that allows viewers to be the captain of the entertainment
ship. They’ll be able to choose what happens to certain characters of their
favorite show and can participate in a “branch narrative” that allows them to
make choices as they watch. To make this possible, actors would shoot
multiple scenes.

What’s More

Let’s check your knowledge on the topics presented in the module. Carefully
read the instructions and do the activities that follow.

Activity 1. Online Shopping Interactivity

Nowadays, the lifestyle of the people is different. They find going to crowded
markets uncomfortable and time consuming. So, E-Shopping is a boon as it saves
lot of time. Online shopping is a process whereby consumers directly buy goods,
services etc. from a seller without an intermediary service over the internet.

9
Your task is to name at least 3 actions that demonstrate interactivity of online
shopping. Write your answers in the graphic organizer shown below. Use a separate
sheet of paper.

ONLINE SHOPPING

Was it easy to name some online shopping interactivity? I’m sure you can still
name some more. Continue doing another activity.

Activity 2. Online Gaming

Online games (also known as internet games) are games that are played
online via the internet. They are distinct from video and computer games in that they
are normally platform independent, relying solely on client-side technologies. All that
is required to play internet games are a web browser and the appropriate “plug-in.”

Online games are important to understand because they offer a huge amount
of fun, enjoyment, teamwork, collaboration, and imaginative adventure for gamers.
However, there are also risk factors that are involved if they have too much of it.

Your task is to complete the table with the advantages and disadvantages of
online gaming. Write your answers in another piece of paper.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Did you find this activity easy? Do you think there are more disadvantages
than advantages of online gaming? I know you have a lot in mind. Let’s continue with
the next activity.

What I Can Do

One of the platforms of interactive media is an interactive website in which

surveys, polls and exams are some of the examples. Moreover, when we encounter
such, these websites use forms for us to fill-in. An online form, also known as a web
form or an HTML form, is an interactive web page that allows user input. The data
received through the form is then automatically sent to a server for processing.

In the past, filling in a form meant collecting a paper document, completing

and sending it off. Today, lots of forms are available online as convenient alternatives
to paper forms. Online forms are becoming very common. There are now lots of
things you can do online. Job applications, car tax and pension benefits are just a
few examples.

Your task is to create an online form using any internet application or

computer software. You may choose from any of the following types of online forms
– sales contact, online event registration, customer feedback form, online order and
payments, account sign-up, or contest registration. Then, attach a screenshot of the
online form you have created in a short bond paper.

Your online form will be graded based on the following criteria:

Clarity - 15 pts.
Free from errors - 10 pts.
Order of fields from easiest to hardest - 5 pts.
Total: 30 pts.

Here is an example of an online form for an account sign-up:
