6. A firm is engaged in producing two products, A and B. each unit of product A requires 2 kg of raw
material and 4 labor hrs for processing, whereas each unit of product B requires 3 kg of raw
material and 3 hrs of labor, of same type. Every week the firm has an availability of 60 kg of raw
material and 96 labor hours. One unit of product A sold gives $40 and one unit of product B sold
yields $ 35 as profit. Formulate an LPP using the above information and solve it using the graphic
method.
Instruction:
A. Set up (Formulate) the linear programming model.
B. Solve the LPM Using Simplex Method (how many of each product should they
manufacture)
C. Find the profit the company can make at optimal solution.
D. Interpret your result
7. The agricultural research institute suggested to a farmer to spread out at least 4800 kg of a special
phosphate fertilizer and not less than 7200kg of special nitrogen fertilize to raise productivity of
crops in his fields. There are two sources for obtaining these mixtures, A and B. both of these are
available in bags weighting 100kg each and they cost $40 and $ 24 respectively. Mixture A
contains phosphate and nitrogen equivalent of 20 kg and 80 kg respectively, while mixture B
contains these ingredients equivalent of 50 kg and each. Write this as LPM and determine how
many bags of each type should he buy in order to obtain the required fertilizer at minimum cost?
8. Pure Gasoline Company operates two refineries with different production capacities. Refinery A
can produce 4,000 gallons per day of super unleaded gasoline, 2000 gallons per day of regular
unleaded gasoline, and 1,000 gallons per day of leaded gasoline. On the other hand refinery B can
produce 1,000 gallons per day of super unleaded, 3,000 gallons per day of regular unleaded and
4,000 gallons per day of leaded. The company has made a contract with an automobile
manufacturer to provide 24,000 gallons of super unleaded, 42,000 gallons of regular un-leaded and
36,000 gallons of leaded. Determine the number of days the company should operate each refinery
in order to meet the terms of the contract most economically, the minimum cost.
9. Solve the following LPP by graphical method
Minimize Z = 20X1 + 40X2
Subject to
36X1 + 6X2 ≥ 108
3X1 + 12X2 ≥ 36
20X1 + 10X2 ≥ 100,

Additional Exercises
Q1. A firm that assembles computer and computer equipment is about to start production of two new
microcomputers. Each type of micro-computer will require assembly time, inspection time and storage
space. The amount of each of these resources that can be devoted to the production of microcomputers

is limited. The manager of the firm would like to determine the quantity of each microcomputer to
produce in order to maximize the profit generated by sales of these microcomputers.
Additional information
In order to develop a suitable model of the problem, the manager has met with design and
manufacturing personnel. As a result of these meetings, the manager has obtained the following
information:
Type 1 Type 2
Profit per unit Birr 60 Birr 50
Assembly time per unit 4hrs 10hrs
Inspection time per unit 2hrs 1hr
Storage space per unit 3cubic ft 3cubic ft
The manager also has acquired information on the availability of company resources. These weekly
amounts are:
Resource Resource available
Assembly time 100hrs
Inspection time 22hrs
Storage space 39 cubic feet
The manager also meet with the firm’s marketing manager and learned that demand for the
