1 Look at the image below and record the climate zone for the following Australian cities: Darwin,
Brisbane, Perth and Hobart. Write your answers in the table on the next page.

2 Use the Bureau of Meteorology’s website ‘Climate Data Online’ (www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/) to
complete the table. Follow the step by step guide below.

Example: Darwin

Step 1: Go to ‘Climate Data Online’.

Step 2: Click on ‘Select using Map’.

Step 3: Select ‘I would like climate statistics’.

Step 4: Enter location (e.g. Darwin) and hit ‘Search’.

Step 5: Select town (e.g. ‘Darwin, NT’) in the drop-down menu.

Step 6: Click on the map at Darwin Airport.

Step 7: Click on ‘Monthly climate stats’ in the pop-up text box and a table with monthly climate
statistics will appear.

Step 8: Find the row of data you require and click on the graph symbol on the far right-hand side. The
site will create a line or bar graph for the relevant data and also display the statistics underneath.

Note that an additional factor to consider is that Darwin is prone to tropical cyclones from November to
May. It is also very humid, meaning there is a high percentage of water vapour in the atmosphere. This
makes the weather very uncomfortable.

4 Discuss the relative merits of the climate in Brisbane, Perth and Hobart.

5 Which climate would you prefer to live in and why?
