NEONATAL CARE NURSE COURSE
Course Description:
The aim of this course is to enhance professional and ethical understanding of neonatal
clinical practice, and increase knowledge and skills for the provision of evidence-based care:
therefore improving the outcomes for sick and/or convalescing infants and their families. The
guiding principles sit within the holistic framework of culturally appropriate, individualised and
developmentally supportive, family centred care.

Graduates may use their extended knowledge in clinical specialties to develop their career
pathway and may find employment in various specialist neonatal nursing, midwifery, educational
and clinical leadership roles such as clinical nurse or midwifery specialists, or credit toward further
studies at Masters level which may lead to higher leadership roles such as clinical nurse or
midwifery consultant, nurse practitioner and research opportunities.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, the student will have exhibited the ability to:
Identify the importance of being a neonatal nurse, also demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills
in neonatal nursing.
Examine evidence based care of neonatal patients and their families.
Articulate the assessment, diagnosis and collaborative management of high risk new born.
Provide evidence of reflective practice problem solving and critical thinking in critical situations of
neonatal infections.
Illustrate knowledge and understanding of medical and surgical management of neonatal
conditions.
Duration: 6 MONTHS

Bachelor of Science in Nursing ,General Nursing & Midwifery & Nursing interns

Module I: NEONATAL NURSING—AN INTRODUCTION

Neonatal nursing definitions and requirements


Philosophy and role of neonatal nurse
Vital statistics causes of neonatal and perinatal mortality
Neonatal nursing care priorities
National programs pertaining to newborn care
Neonatal procedures and equipment
Module II: CARE OF NEWBORN

Extrauterine life: Fetal to neonatal circulation


Extrauterine life : Assessment of neonatal transition
Newborn baby—Profile and characteristics of newborn
Comprehensive assessment of neonate
Nursing care of the newborn at birth
Care of the newborn and family
Common neonatal problems
Neonatal nutrition—Breast feeding
Neonatal pain assessment and management
Thermoregulation of the newborn infant

Module III: HIGH RISK NEONATES

Preterm, low birth weight neonates


Assessment of gestation, neonatal behavior, neonatal reflexes
High risk newborn—Identification classification and nursing management
Immunization including immunization of a preterm neonate
Organization of neonatal care services level I, II, III care, transport, neonatal intensive care unit
Discharge planning
Organisation and management of nursing services in NICU
Kangaroo mother care (KMC) and care of low birth weight babies
Neonatal resuscitation

Module IV: NEONATAL INFECTIONS

Intrauterine infections
Prenatal HIV, Congenital syphilis
Bacterial infections, Viral infections, Fungal infections
Septicemia
Meningitis
Osteomyelitis and arthritis
Pneumonia
Diarrhea
Nosocomial infections
Superficial infections
Nursing management and infection control measures

Module V: NEONATAL DISORDERS

Pathophysiology, assessment, treatment modalities including surgery and nursing management of


various neonatal medical and surgical disorders.
Post mature infant and baby of diabetic and substance use mothers
Respiratory conditions:
Asphyxia neonatorum, neonatal apneas, meconium aspiration syndrome, pneumothorax,
pneumomediastinum, Hyaline membrane disease, pulmonary hemorrhage
Icterus neonatorum
Birth injuries
Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
Congenital anomalies
Neonatal seizures
Neonatal hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia, hypomagnesaemia
Neonatal heart diseases, hypertension in neonates, Shock, congestive cardiac failure
Hematology—Rh and ABO hemolytic disease, anemia, polycythemia, bleeding and coagulation
disorders.
Neonatal ophthalmology—retinopathy of prematurity
