The document describes an experiment to determine the concentration of a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution using a standard oxalic acid solution. The experiment involves titrating a known volume of the standard oxalic acid solution with the NaOH solution until the endpoint is reached, as indicated by a color change of the phenolphthalein indicator. Calculations using the mole ratio between oxalic acid and NaOH in the reaction allow determining that the concentration of the supplied NaOH solution is 0.098 M.

Experiment No. 1
Name of the Experiment: Standardization of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution with
a standard solution of oxalic acid (HOOC-COOH∙2H2O).

Objective of the experiment: The objective of this experiment is to determine the

concentration of a supplied NaOH solution with a standard solution of oxalic acid using
phenolphthalein as an indicator.

Theory: Explain it by yourself (explain what type of reaction it is, which one is acid and
why, which one is base and why, mention the indicator and its role, etc.)

Calculation for the preparation of standard oxalic acid solution:

solution of oxalic acid using phenolphthalein as an indicator.

No. of Volume of Burette reading for the volume of Concentration

obs. oxalic acid NaOH solution (mL) of NaOH
solution (mL) Initial Final Difference Average solution (M)
1 - - 10.1
2 10.0 - - 10.2 10.2
3 - - 10.5
4 - - 10.3
Average is taken from observation no. 1, 2 and 4.
Reaction:
COOH COONa
(aq) + 2NaOH (aq) (aq) + 2H2O (l)
COOH COONa
COOH
Therefore, 1 mol of 2 mol of NaOH
COOH

Calculation (Unitary method):

Concentration of oxalic acid solution is 0.050 M
Volume of oxalic acid solution taken = 10.0 mL

1000 mL oxalic acid solution contains 0.050 mol of oxalic acid

𝟎.𝟎𝟓𝟎
1 mL oxalic acid solution contains mol of oxalic acid
𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎
𝟎.𝟎𝟓𝟎 𝐱 𝟏𝟎.𝟎
10.0 mL oxalic acid solution contains mol of oxalic acid
𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎

= 5 x 104 mol of oxalic acid

From reaction,
1 mol of oxalic acid ≡ 2 mol of NaOH
5 x 104 mol of oxalic acid ≡ 2 x 5 x 104 mol of NaOH
= 1 x 103 mol of NaOH

Average burette reading for the volume of NaOH solution is 10.2 mL

Therefore,
10.2 mL NaOH solution contains 1 x 103 mol of NaOH
𝟏 𝐱 𝟏𝟎 𝟑
1 mL NaOH solution contains mol of NaOH
𝟏𝟎.𝟐
𝟏 𝐱 𝟏𝟎 𝟑 𝐱 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎
1000 mL NaOH solution contains mol of NaOH
𝟏𝟎.𝟐
= 0.098 mol of NaOH
So, the concentration of the supplied NaOH solution is 0.098 mol /L or 0.098 M.

Formula Method: Do it by yourself (same value should be obtained as Unitary method).

Result: The concentration of the supplied NaOH solution is 0.098 M.
