1 Spin
1.1 Addition of Angular Momentum
Exercise 1: Addition of Angular Momentum

a) Explicitly construct the states of total spin for a system of two spin − 12 particles

b) Use the table (given below) to verify the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients

c) Construct the |l1 , l2 ; l, m⟩ = |1, 1; 0, 0⟩ state explicitly and by using the table

3
1.2 Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients (CGC)
Exercise 2: Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients (CGC)

a) The CGC possess the symmetry property

⟨l1 , l2 ; m1 , m2 |l, m⟩ = (−1)l−l1 −l2 ⟨l2 , l1 ; m2 , m1 |l, m⟩. (1)

Use this property to show that for two electrons in equivalent orbitals the total orbital angular
momentum quantum number l must have even values for singlet (spin) states and odd values for
triplet states.

b) Prove the recurrence relation

s
l2 (l2 + 1) − m2 (m2 + 1)
⟨l1 , l2 ; m1 − 1, m2 + 1|l, l⟩ = − ⟨l1 , l2 ; m1 , m2 |l, l⟩ (2)
l1 (l1 + 1) − m1 (m1 − 1)

c) Verify this recurrence relation explicitly for the coefficient ⟨l1 , l2 ; m1 , m2 |l, l⟩ = ⟨1, 21 ; 1, − 12 | 12 , 21 ⟩
using the table on the next page.

1.3 Spin Operators
Exercise 3: spin operators a) Write down the spin operators S 2 , Sx, Sy, Sz in matrix representa-
tion, i.e. using the basis |s, mi, for the case of spin- 1 2 and spin- 3 2 b) Check the commutation
relations for [Sx, Sy] and s = 3 2 . c) Construct spin– 1 2 states that have hS · n^i = ± ¯h 2
for arbitrary direction n^ (see also problem 4.30 of the book)
