Report Assignment Mat523

This document discusses using linear, quadratic, and cubic models to analyze the relationship between athletes' ages and total medals achieved at the 2012 Olympics. It provides the matrix representations and normal equations for each model and calculates the least squares solutions. Graphs of the best fit lines for each model against the observed data are also presented.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The contemporary Olympic Games, sometimes known as the Olympics, are the most
important international athletic events involving summer and winter sports competitions.
Thousands of competitors compete in a range of activities. The Olympic Games are the world's
most prestigious sporting event, with over 200 countries competing. The Olympic Games are held
every four years, with the Summer and Winter Olympics alternated every two years within that
time.

Several adjustments to the Olympic Games have evolved from the evolution of the
Olympic Movement in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Winter Olympic Games for
snow and ice sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with disabilities, the Youth Olympic
Games for athletes aged 14 to 18, the five Continental Games which are Pan American, African,
Asian, European, and also Pacific.

Public funding and overall marketing of the Games have become more prominent as the
media has grown significantly. 1916, 1940, and 1944 Olympics were cancelled due to World Wars
I and II and the 2020 Olympics were postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Athletes thrive in athletics or physical exercise, specifically when competing in organized

sports. And, if properly prepared, athletes can compete in international sporting events such as the
Olympic Games and the Southeast Asian Games. The number of medals won by a country's
athletes is frequently used to determine the winner of sporting events. The number of medals won
by competitors might change depending on their age.

We want to investigate if there is a predicted relationship between athletes age and total
medals achieved in 2012. The least squares method will be employed in this study. The least square
approach is a type of mathematical regression analysis that determines the best fit line for a set of
data, displaying the relationship between the data points visually. The athletes age will be plotted
on the horizontal axis, while the total medals achieved will be plotted on the vertical axis.

5.0 ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION

Based on the model above, the following error magnitudes in the approximation are obtained.

Types of Best Fit Curve Error magnitude

Linear 2.2338
Quadratic 2.1524
Cubic 1.9659

∴ The best fit curves in this case which will give the best approximation is the cubic model because
it has the minimum error in terms of its magnitude.
