Cell Parts and Functions 2

Plant and animal cells contain organelles that each have a specific function. The organelles include the nucleus, which contains the cell's genetic information; the cytoplasm, which supports the organelles; and mitochondria, which produce energy. A key difference is that plant cells contain chloroplasts for photosynthesis and a cell wall for structure, while animal cells lack these and have a cell membrane as their outermost layer.

12D differentiate between structure and function in plant and animal cell organelles including cell membrane, cell wall,
nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondrion, chloroplasts and vacuole

Cell Parts & Functions

Cells are made up of small organ-like structures called organelles. Each organelle has
a specific function that helps the cell function as a whole. Plant and animal cells are
similar, but they have different structures specific to their needs & functions.

Name of
Function Where found
organelle
nucleus
-control center for cell activities
-contains genetic information in chromosomes plant & animal cells
(DNA) that determine which traits are passed to
offspring

cytoplasm
-clear thick jelly-like fluid between the inside the
cell membrane plant & animal cells
-contains & supports the organelles

mitochondria -provides energy for the cell

-“power house” of the cell
-site of cellular respiration which releases plant & animal cells
energy by breaking the chemical bonds of food

vacuole -stores water, wastes & other materials

-helps provide shape & structure in plant cells plant & animal cells
-larger in plant cells since they may have to go
for long periods without rain
cell membrane
-controls what moves in & out of the cell (takes
in food/ gases & removes wastes)
plant & animal cells
-outermost layer of an animal cell
-inside the cell wall of plant cells
cell wall
-rigid, outermost layer of the plant cell
*plant cells only
-shapes, protects & supports the cell

chloroplast
-contains chlorophyll, a green pigment, that
traps sunlight *plant cells only
-site of photosynthesis
