Assignment I
Assignment I
CO1 Apply the basic laws of hydrostatics to engineering problems involving static fluids and
submerged surfaces
CO2 Evaluate and apply the principles of continuity, momentum, and energy conservation to
systems involving fluid motion
1. The equation of state for a liquid is P= (3500ρ1/2 + 2500) N/m2. Then find the bulk
modulus of the liquid at a pressure of 100 kPa.
2. Determine the viscosity of a liquid having kinematic viscosity 6 stokes and specific
gravity 1.9.
4. A rectangular plane surface is 2 m wide and 3 m deep. It lies in a vertical plane in the
water. Determine the total pressure and position of the center of pressure on the plane
surface when its upper edge is horizontal and (a) coincides with the water surface (b) 2.5
m below the free water surface.
5. Determine the total pressure on a circular plate of diameter 1.5 m which is placed
vertically in water so that the center of the plate is 3 m below the free surface of the
water. Find the position of the center of pressure also.
6. A wooden block in the form of a rectangular prism floats with its shortest axis vertically.
The block is 40 cm long, 20 cm wide, and 15 cm deep with a depth of immersion of 12
cm. Calculate the position of the metacenter and comment on the stability of the block.
7. A solid cylinder of diameter 30 cm and height 15 cm is to float in water with its axis
vertical in seawater (SG=1.03). If the relative density of the cylinder material is 0.9,
examine the stability of the cylinder.
8. A hollow cylinder 1.0m long has internal and external diameters of 0.4m and 0.6m,
respectively. Both ends of the cylinder are open. If the weight of the cylinder is 700 N,
analyze whether the cylinder would be stable and float in water with its axis vertically.

9. A flow is represented by v= ax ȋ + ay k where “a” is constant. Then find the equation of
streamline passing through (1, 2).
10. A compressible fluid is flowing steadily through a pipe whose area reduces by 40% from
section 1 to section 2. It is further known that the corresponding reduction in density is
15% compared to the velocity of the fluid in section 1. Then velocity at section 2
increases by what factor?
3
11. The velocity component in x & y directions are u= [λxy3- x2y]; v= [xy2- 4 y4]. Then what
is the value of λ for incompressible flow?
13. Water enters a pipe of x-area A1 that divides into two sections of equal area A2 and A3.
At one instant, the flow velocities are v1= 2 m/s, v2= 3 m/s and v3= 5 m/s. At another
instant v1= 3 m/s, v2= 4 m/s. They find the value of v3.
1
14. A fluid with a discharge of 5 m3/sec enters a nozzle. The x-axis varies with x as 𝐴 =
1+𝑥2
Assuming the flow to be steady & 1D. Find the acceleration at any point in the nozzle.
15. In 2D flow field the X-Y plane (p) U = 2y, v = -3x (q) u = 3xy, v = 0 (r) u= -2x, v= 2y.
Determine whether the flow is Incompressible or Irrotational or both.
16. A 2D flow field has velocity along the x & y direction where, U = x2t, V = -2xyt
where t is time what is the equation of streamline?
18. A two-dimensional field is given by u= (x2- y2), v=-2xy, Drive the expression for the
streamlines of this flow.
19. For the following flows, find the equation of the streamline passing through (1,1). a) v=
3xi-3yj and b) v=-y2i-6xj.
