This blended learning lesson plan teaches students to add and subtract through various activities. The lesson begins with an introductory video to explain the objectives. Students are then split into groups that rotate between teacher-led, collaborative, and independent digital game stations. At each station, students practice adding and subtracting through discussion, peer tutoring, and math games. The lesson concludes with an exit ticket and homework assignment to assess understanding. The video and digital game were chosen to engage students through fun, multimedia content relevant to the objectives.

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Adding and Subtracting

Objectives:
Students will be able to add and subtract.
Students will be able to know the difference between adding and subtracting.
State Standards:
2.NSBT.5 Add and subtract fluently through 99 using knowledge of place value and properties
of operations.
Context: Adding and subtracting is something that people use in their everyday lives, that is why
this lesson is very important to teach my students. The students will be coming in already
knowing how to compare two numbers with up to three digits using words and symbols. Then
next week the students will learn how to add up four two-digit numbers.
Data: They will be grouped up by 5’s based off those previous tests and how quickly they can
pick up content from previous lessons. Data will be collected from the work being done in the
groups, and also from the homework that will be handed out to the students at the end of class.
Materials: Chalkboard, smartboard, pencils, ipads, headphones, apps, websites, videos

Procedures:
Introduction (15mins):
Students will walk into class and put all their belongings away in their cubbies. The
classroom will already be set up into groups of 5 with the students assigned to one. The students
will find their name at one of the groups and sit down quietly until further instructions. I will
start off the class by watching an 8min adding and subtracting video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J1OkxuyLD0 ) together as a class, so all the students have
an idea of what the lesson will be on. After the video is done, I will then ask the students “So
what do you think you guys will be learning today?” Once they have answered I will then move
forward to explaining what will be happening in each group, and that they will be rotating
clockwise. I will make sure none of the students have any questions and let them know a timer
will be going off every 10mins. Once the timer goes off they will stop what they are doing and
rotate right away that way every student gets enough time at every group.
Teacher Directed (10mins):
In this group we will be at the chalk board, and I will already have a t-chart up
split with adding on one side and subtracting on the other side. I will ask the students “What is
the difference between adding and subtracting?” The students will raise their hands and as they
give me answers I will write them on the t-chart in the spot they go. Students will be able to hear
their peers’ thoughts being able to learn more from others, while also being able to express their
thoughts too. After they have given me a bunch of ideas for both adding and subtracting, I will
then ask them some scenarios for example, “I need to give my friend $10, would I add or
subtract my money.” While I ask these questions, I will be paying attention to who is able to
answer quickly and who is answering correctly to help me plan the next lesson and see what the
students need more work on.

Collaborative (10mins):
In this group the students will be quizzing each other. Everyone will get a sheet of
paper that has adding and subtracting practice problems, and there will already be pencils at the
grou. Once all the students complete all the practice problems, they will trade with another
student in the group and then grade each other. Then they will take all the answers that were
wrong combined, and they will be quizzed on them again. That way everyone will keep
practicing even if they got that problem right. Repetition is the best way to obtain knowledge.
They will keep doing this until everyone gets all the problems right or until the time runs out. If a
student is being disrespectful to another peer during this group, they will be asked to leave and
not be able to participate in the other groups.

Independent Digital (10mins):

In this group the students will all grab their own ipads and headphones that are already
assigned to them. This will be quiet independent work. There are math games that are already
predownloaded for them to play and that is what they will be doing for the 10mins. The game
that they are directed to play is Math Kids – Add, Subtract, Count. This gives them a way to
further practice their adding and subtracting skills and their counting skills from the previous
lessons. This allows the students to learn while having a little fun with it, making them want to
play more and obtain more. I will ask the students to play this game alone that way they can see
how well they have perfected it without any peer or teacher help.

Closure (15mins):
I will bring the class all back together. Once everyone is seated and all paying attention I
will ask if anyone has any additional questions. Once I answer all the students’ questions and
make sure everyone is on the same page, I will announce how I feel everyone did with the
assignment. To make sure everyone is up to pace I will hand out an exit ticket for everyone to fill
out before they leave. As I am handing out the exit ticket, I will be describing their homework
that will have 5 practice problems on them to work on at home. As they are walking out handing
me the exit tickets, I will be handing them their homework.
Rationale:
(Multimedia 1https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J1OkxuyLD0): I chose a video to
start the class because it allows the students to understand what they will be learning
during the lesson without having to constantly listen to my own voice. This video is fun
and perfect for kids, it incorporates donuts, and all kids love donuts. The pace of the
video is a good pace for everyone to keep up, and that is one thing that stuck out for me.
The designs are also fun and creative which I thought was perfect for the students. It hits
all the things the students will be learning in class, and I will share it with the other
teachers.

(Multimedia 2
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/math-kids-add-subtract-count/id1466931283?mt=12 .): I
chose this app because it’s a fun, entertaining way to do simple adding and subtracting
for the students. It has animals as the host which all the students will love, and it has great
background noises to engage the students. Since the students have headphones, they are
allowed to completely engage with the game and get the whole experience. Since the
game is fun it will motivate the students to want to keep playing, and the game is free so
they can download it on heir devices at home, so they can practice more and perfect it.
