NOISE

Noise can be defined as unwanted sound or sound in the wrong place at wrong time. It
can also be defined as any sound that is undesirable because it interferes with speech and
hearing, is intense enough to damage hearing, or is other wise annoying.

Noise pollution (or environmental noise) is displeasing human-, animal- or machine-

created sound that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life

Noise measurements are expressed by term ‘sound pressure level’ (SPL), which is the
logarithmic ratio of the sound pressure to a reference pressure and is expressed as a
dimensionless unit of power, the decibel (dB)

The reference level is 0.0002 microbar, the threshold of human hearing

SPL = 20 log10 (P/Po)

• microbars- 1 millionth of a bar, where a bar is
Where SPL= sound pressure level, dB equal to 100 kPa or 14.7 psi (atmospheric
P = sound pressure, microbar pressure at sea level)
Po = reference pressure
•Wave Lengths-distance between pressure peaks

•Frequency - The number of wavelengths that appear to pass a fixed point in 1 second.
[cps or Hz]
•Amplitude-heights of the peak which represents the pressure intensity and is related
to the volume or loudness.

•Cycle - is a single wave length

Sound Intensity (W/m2) - is proportional to the square of the root mean square (rms) value
of a sound pressure or SPL . For every 10 dB increase in SPL,
there is a 10 fold increase in sound intensity.

Frequency Weighting Networks- noise is broken down to bands of low-medium-high

frequency. “A-weighted” network filters out low and high frequency where human ears is
less efficient. [dBA is A-weighted decibels]

Sound Level (SL)- Sound Level measurement over a period of time. i.e. L90=75 dBA means
90% of the time sound level exceeeded 75 dBA.

Sound Exposure Level (SEL) - provides a basis for computing noise events of variable
durations which matches a person’s impression of noise. It is standardized to 1 sec.

Equivalent Sound Level (Leq)- It is the average or constant SPL over the period of interest.
HEALTH EFFECTS
• Noise pollution adversely affects the lives of millions of people. It can
damage physiological and psychological health.
• High blood pressure, stress related illness, sleep disruption, hearing loss,
and productivity loss are the problems related to noise pollution.
• It can also cause memory loss, severe depression, and panic attacks.

SOURCES OF NOISE POLLUTION

• Road Transport is the main source of noise pollution in urban areas.
• Construction of building, highways, and streets cause noise pollution.
• Industrial activities also causes noise pollution.
• Use of loud speakers, plumbing, boilers, generators, air conditioners, fans,
and vacuum cleaners add to the existing noise pollution.

Area code Category of Area Limit in dB(A) Leq.

Day Time Night Time

A Industrial Area 75 70
B Commercial Area 65 55
C Residential Area 55 45
D Silence Zone 50 40

Note 1 : Day time is reckoned in between 6 a.m. & 10p.m.

Note 2 : Night time is reckoned in between 10 p.m & 6a.m.
Note 3 : Silence zone is defined as area’s upto 100 meters around such premises as
Hospitals, Educational institutions and courts. The silence zones areas to be declared by
competent authorities.
